None of you people are US soccer fans?
I threaten to annoy people every day with this link until I see some proper enthusiasism for our US men's national soccer team, who'll be playing in next month's World Cup (Germany).

Now you will watch this compilation of goals scored our team in the 2002 WC (Korea), and like it.

3. YOU will be eliminated
for that disloyal remark! Each member of the team gets to shoot a penalty kick directly at you -- no cup allowed.

they won't be officially eliminated until after the pool play concludes, which should take about a week.

The sad thing is, it's not even that they suck, it's just that they got stuck in a group with the Czechs (#2 ranked in the world) and the Italians (three-time champions), and only two get through to the knockout (single-elimination) stages. So, time to order that pizza, unless the developing scandal in the Italian club league somehow manages to blow back on the Azzurri.

Figures. Just when people are finally beginning to pay attention, they'll go from quarterfinalists last time out to road kill, thus crushing any U.S. interest in the sport for another couple of decades. :eyes:

edit: threw in a third 'l'. They can at least beat Ghana, for crying out loud!

13. They got placed in the Group of Death
While Mexico, who placed second in the CONCACAAF to the US, got seeded into a easier group.

Brian Ching made the squad, first Hawaiian ever to play in the WC.

19. Actually Group C is considered to be the "Group of Death"
(note to n00bs: every World Cup has to have at least one, for some reason.)

Group C contains two-time champs Argentina, the Netherlands, Serbia and Montenegro (that's one country, what's left of Yugoslavia), and hapless Cote d'Ivoire. Ouch. I guess that makes Group E the "Group of Terminal Illness" or something. The grouping process leaves much to be desired, and no, to my knowledge, Diebold was not involved.

21. "Crushing any interest".... don't think so
Perhaps with the non-football fans. But this year the USA could flame out 0-3, and yet the depth gets better every year, more and more americans play on first tier clubs around the globe every year, more big clubs from Europe come here every summer, and MLS is putting down roots slowly but surely. One year soon (perhaps even in 8 or 12 years) the USA will have an excellent team, catch a break , and end up in the semis. That's when interest with the non-football fan will be acquired and kept.

Ghana has been doing good things recently, and has been the surprise giant slayer for years.

My dad gave me a "Future Striker" shirt for my oldest daughter while I was pregnant with her; she's now nearly 19.

20. My best friend's parents had season tickets to the Kicks one year.
Mark Moran and Gary Vogel lived in a house in our neighborhood, and they were rather indulgent of our adolescent fanhood.

No red-blooded American would EVER watch it.

Give me rugby union any day. Now THAT's a patriotic sport.
