Poll: 25% believe they've been wiretapped

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- One in four Americans believe that the government has wiretapped their phone calls, according to a CNN poll released Thursday.

I'm sure Big Brother has listened in. That why I now say 'Fuck Bush' in every phone call. I want to be sure they know where I stand.

I call Canada quite frequently. I don't know if the NSA targets phone calls up North.

If they are, they've listened in to some interesting phone chats. :-)

Didn't I read that it was probably 200 million Americans? That would be most of us.

Many, many calls to a Muslim country (Indonesia) in a foreign tongue with the occcassional reference to Bush I'm certain puts me on some kind of red-flag list somewhere.

Here's what worries me about that...

My wife is the one making the calls to family members. Frequently, she employs Indonesian phrases that I often can make no sense out of, just like I use many that makes her scratch her head in confusion as well. So I worry that my wife make make some comment in passing, like "Bush kills me," but that some scribe deep in the bowels of the CIA or NSA will translate out to "Bush will be killed," and then a whole heap of trouble lands on our doorstep.

Given our governments numerous missteps in this whole 'war on terror' doesn't exactly give me a lot of confidence that they'll be able to accurately separate the wheat from the chaff when it comes to monitoring ordinary citizen's phone calls.

If so, then no I don't think I have been.

I really don't understand how the whole wiretapping thing works, honestly.

... it was all very alligator-clips and literally "tapping" in to the electrical wires that carried the phone signal into your home.

Now it's all electronic and it can be done from just about anywhere.

Only if they are interested in phone calls to and from Germany. Which are largely about the weather, and cooking.

i never bother covering my trax, so they know what i'm up to.


besides, i've no1 to call...

Some very close friends of our have friends in Iran.
We've met them. Very nice couple. Physicians. Their son lives in the U.S.
When I talk to our friends on the phone I always hear weird clicks & stuff that I don't hear on other calls.

since my website has been getting a lot of attention and since i've talked with cindy sheehan over the phone. :shrug:

I don't do that anymore.

and there is no other plausible explanation. The phone is fine, the phone company reports no problems on the line, and the clicking sounds like someone has picked up the extension phone in another room---but they haven't. I knew a guy who always called in to the place I worked, and he said he was recording the conversation for accuracy. There was always the same clicking going on when he did that. I'm convinced our phone has been tapped---but no one will get any "terrist" insight on my phone. They'll just get family news and other assorted BS.

But hubby has done overseas eBay transactions, so I'm sure we're a target. You know, subversive action figure sales and all... :P

I might rant in public sotto voce or online, but my phone calls are pretty limited to family, friends and my various medical people. With caller ID, I pretty much know enough not to answer the phone for any ones other than those. :) Listening to tapes of my conversations would surely drive someone nuts from boredom.
