Might be an old Pratt and Whitney "Wasp"
Radial engines saw extensive use in Carrier based airplanes during world war 2.

11. Beat me to it, yup, that's an old airplane engine.
And I think you're also correct about it being a P&W Wasp


Looks like a sure suicide method to me, unless the guy really knows what the hell he's doing. The torque on take off could very well throw him right off the back. Oh well, stay tuned, we might have another Darwin award winner soon.
