ONLY $29 million grossed for DA VINCI CODE??
That's the number I just heard a few minutes ago. $29,000,000 total gross for The Da Vinci Code so far. I mean, sure, it's a pretty decent chunk of change, but can it really qualify as a "blockbuster" with opening numbers like that?

1. wow, that's terrible if true
If true, that's probably about 1/3 of what they were hoping for...

Typically, a domestic movie grosses about 3 times its opening day totals - so, that would translate into a $90 million total gross. And, as I said above, I bet they were hoping for that for the opening weekend.

2. Just a repeat of a greater pattern
This has happened to many "big release" films. Over the last couple of years there has been an overall trend downward of box office receipts. Hollywood can't seem to figure out what is going on. Maybe if we just told them to stop putting out such garbage.
Let me give you and idea of what I have seen.
Where I live in Maine there is an independent theater nearby. The show the big-release stuff but about half of what is on-screen are independent films. It is kind of neat. Not only that, a matinee admission is only $5 compared to big chain theaters where it could be 7$-$8.
Up until a few days ago, "V" was still playing in that theater. Another movie that is still playing at that theater is "The Last American Indian", a film that I have not seen advertised on TV at all. "Thank You for Smoking" is still playing there. Two other films that stayed for a while was "Syriana" and "Good Night and Good Luck". That tells you something. My own opinion is that the demographics of moviegoers has changed and those people are looking for more sophisticated films.
Just my two cents.

8. Make that $224 million
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - All the protests and all the bad reviews could not prevent "The Da Vinci Code" from recording a $224 million worldwide opening, the second-biggest debut ever at the global box office, its distributor said on Sunday.

11. $224 million worldwide opening!
The Da Vinci Code movie took $224m (£119m) at box offices around the world at the weekend despite controversy and bad reviews, its distributor has said.
<snip>
Outside the US and Canada, though, The Da Vinci Code will have broken the record for ticket sales if the figures are verified, making $147m (£78m) in three days.

12. Nice. Take that, Pat Robertson, Falwell, and the other
ultra-Catholic fundies that tried to boycott the movie.

But overall, take that, critics. The critics have trashedt he movie, mainly on what they wrongly call "anti-Catholic." Idiots.

Lunatic Fringe
I know you're out there
You're in hiding
And you hold your meetings
We can hear you coming
We know what you're after
We're wise to you this time
We won't let you kill the laughter

Lunatic Fringe
In the twilight's last gleaming
This is open season
But you won't get too far
We know you've got to blame someone
For your own confusion
But we're on guard this time
Against your final solution

We can hear you coming
(We can hear you coming)
No you're not going to win this time
We can hear the footsteps
(We can hear the footsteps)
Way out along the walkway
Lunatic Fringe
We know you're out there
But in these new dark ages
There will still be light

An eye for an eye
Well, before you go under
Can you feel the resistance
Can you feel the...thunder
