there are many Brazilians with non-sexy American names. We know one fellow whose name is Edison-- that's his *first* name-- and another guy whose parents named him Washington.

This may be one reason why Brazilians have this propensity to change their names, especially when they get famous. Everybody knows about Xuxa (the Katie Couric of Brazil) or Pele (soccer great who was Xuxa's boyfriend for a while). There was a guitarist who called himself Bola Sete (seven ball, as in billiards). One of my favorites is a rap artist known as Gabriel O Pensador, or Gabriel the Thinker. (I like to mis-read it as Gabriel Opens a Dor, because he does that too.)

How long has it been since I last posted my rant about how boring Brazil's place names are? Rio de Janeiro means the January River, because the bay was "discovered" one day in January, and the stupid white men assumed it was the mouth of a river. There's a state called Minas Gerais, or General Mines, as if it's a corporation-- and many of the cities therein are named after whatever it was they used to mine there: Diamantina (diamond), Esmerelda (emerald), Ouro Preto (black gold), etc.

On the other hand, the big international airport that serves Rio is named after Antonio Carlos Jobim, which I think is great. How many countries do you know that name their public works after cool composers? We have airports named after bad film actors-- John Wayne and Ronald Reagan.
