I just got a cat!
Here he is.

He's about nine months old, and not very big. I think maybe he's some kind of miniature! haha

I've named him Colonel Francois Beauregard. Call him the Fluffster for short. I haven't had a cat since I was about four, when I developed an allergy to them. This is the first cat I've met that I am not allergic to - pretty exciting!!!

1. Congratulations!
Now go to the ATM, take out lots of $$, and buy him a scratching post, a bed, a toy with feathers, some treats...
Or if your balance is a little on the low side, wad up some paper and roll it on the floor, fold up a towel and put in a box for his bed. About the only thing you can't compromise on is a scratching post -- he does need something to stretch his claws on. Otherwise, your furniture and door jambs could end up looking ratty in no time.

3. Thanks to my parents, who gave him to me, he's all set.
He's got a scratching post, kitty condo, enclosed litter box, treats, toys, you name it.

Spoiled kitty.

I am thinking about putting those acrylic nail-covers on him, too. I've heard good things about those from animal lovers. No way will I declaw him.

7. Softpaws are totally cool, and not that hard to "install" on your cat
It takes two people, though!

Congrats on your kitty - my three send their best!

19. They're adorable.
I've always liked animals. In passing. But I am afraid I've become a cat person. How'd THAT happen? A life of spinsterhood yawns before me.

2. How cool!
He's adorable. :)

Our roomie is about to move out and take her freakin' rockin' kittie with her. I've actually been scanning local shelters today. Which is weird as I'm not even anything close to a "cat person", but Fran's totally won me over. :D

Don't tell hedges. :hide:

5. Yeah, I'm a dog person
Previously had two house rabbits (highly recommended).

I always hated cats. Mostly because I was allergic. The older I get, though, the more I like them. For their cat qualities - independent, aloof, etc. I spent the weekend with my friend's Spaniel and I was about ready to shoot myself. Those things are like 3-year-olds. Only with more drool. And 3-year-olds don't shed (usually).

8. Here's to Fluffster!
Congratulations, I'm glad your allergies are not acting up. I know a lot of people who are allergic, but who have cats anyway. Your kindness will be repaid many times over...there's nothing like having a kitty to curl up with.

20. I think I'll be okay with him
as long as I don't stick my finger in my eye.

This cat I can pet, pick up, let him lick my face - not even a sneeze or a twitch. Other cats, I get red spots all over, sneeze, itchy red eyes, the whole lot.

Weird.

11. Get yourself a good air-cleaner, not that expensive to help keep that
allergy away. Enjoy your new kitty.

12. Awwwwww
I have a bizarre agreement with cats. When I'm sober, cats want nothing to do with me. When I get high, they think I'm their best friend...

14. He's CUTE! re: claws, make handling his paws and claws part of
your lovey dovey petting sessions-- practice pushing the claw out like you were going to clip. If they get used to you handling their paws at a young age then they don't freak out so much when you bring out the clippers.

Might not ever be a huge cat, but 9 mo. is still teenager -- don't get completely full grown till about 2 yrs.

HAVE fun! As they say-- enjoy these years. They get to be lazy old couch potatoes in no time at all!

15. Congrats!

When I got my kitties, I wasn't allergic to them either....or so I thought. Turns out, I am still allergic, but it comes and goes.

And frankly, I would be in an iron lung before I even gave a thought to being without my cats and dogs!

Hope you'll do some good research on the web on Pet foods, and choose a good, healthy brand like Innova, Wellness, Nature's Variety Prarie, etc....(if you haven't looked into raw foods, I would encourage you to read up on it. Your kitty will thank you)

21. Thanks for that.
He's on IAMS for now, courtesy my stepmother. My dad was giving him cheap supermarket crap. IAMS was the best thing on offer in the small East Texas town he came from... I will look into your suggestions, though. I am walking distance from Whole Food World Headquarters (lucky me).

16. I'd like to get a cat when I move.
But I might be getting another dog depending on the outcome of a certain situation, so I should hold off on the cat thing.

Congrats on your new furry friend! He's a beauty. :bounce:

You guys have some cute cats. But then you're all so smart and fascinating and liberal that I wouldn't've expected anything less.

The Colonel is currently sitting on my lap looking at the posts! haha
