Need airline expertise-daughter in Morocco/ticket problem
Looking for any addtl advice, reassurances or just good wishes. (This is long..so thanks for reading.)

My daughter who is 23 is on her first overseas trip to Spain and Morocco. She booked her tickets thru Delta. She flew Delta from New York to Madrid and is supposed to be returning on Air Maroc from Casablanca to New York.

She called yesterday & said that it appears they pulled her return ticket when she boarded in New York as all she has is her New York to Madrid ticket. Her return ticket is gone. She doesn't have an E ticket, this is strictly a paper ticket situation.

I've called Delta and have been told it's complicated but they are doing everything they can to get her on the flight back on Sunday. It's complicated because she's not flying back on Delta and because Delta does not have any representation in Casablanca. The person at Delta helping me has told me that he has contacted Air Maroc and Air France and has sent them a fax authorizing them to do anything needed to get her on the flight on the behalf of Delta. (He said something about a Skyteam or something but I'm wasn't clear on that.) I think maybe they have some kind of deal with Air France as he has told me to tell my daughter to try to go to the Air France ticket office before going to the airport and they should be able to issue her a replacement ticket.

They told me that the worst case scenario is that she will have to buy a replacement ticket for (gulp) 1200.00 but that Delta will refund her when she returns to North America.

So anyway, if you've made it this far...does it seem like I've done everything I can? Does it sound like Delta is doing everything it can? I told my daughter I'm sure everything will be fine and she probably believed me but of course I'm worried. Thanks for listening...

1. I'm a "typical" american in the sense that I've never traveled overseas.
So I am afraid I can't offer you much by way of experience. I will say that it sounds as if the airlines are really extending themselves in order to rectify the situation instead of just leaving her stuck - so that all sounds okay. It sounds like everything will work out just fine.

Honestly - the best trips are usually the ones that end up with some "disaster" like this. She'll have a great story to tell when she gets back. :)

Anyway - I'm kicking this so maybe someone more airline experiences than myself may see it and answer.

3. skyteam is the name of the alliance

northwest, delta, klm, air france, some other airlines are part of the skyteam alliance

therefore air france is supposed to try to help even tho she bought the ticket thru delta

if there is any authorization number or ticket number on the fax it would be helpful to have that, otherwise, have the name of the person you spoke to or SOMETHING your daughter can tell them at air france

unfortunately air france is notorious for rude service and the passenger or wanna-be passenger dare not show the slightest sign of distress or impatience or they really freak out -- or so rumor say, i've only flown klm (who they're merging w.) and haven't personally noticed anything especially dicey

but warn your daughter that no matter how distressed she gets it might be better to make a point of showing no emotion and just being v. patient -- this advice might be totally unnecessary as the stories i've heard are almost universally abt charles de gaulle, the airport everyone loves to hate, so she might not even encounter any air france "dragons" elsewhere

good luck to you, you know what? everything WILL be fine, she WILL get home, but i will be honest and admit that air france does not always enjoy a reputation for getting it right the first time

so do not panic if they don't put her on the first plane out and if there is a delay

they get around to doing their job eventually

if your daughter speaks french, it may help her get better treatment from some of the clerks, but eventually someone WILL help her

if you have the name of the clerk who said your daughter would be reimbursed, honestly, if i was being too run around by air france, i would do as said, get the ticket, apply for reimbursement from delta when safely home

but if you are not sure who you spoke to and have no proof of what was said, i would be a little cautious there, maybe call back again and confirm this information first, maybe i'm a little anal and nervous tho but where money is involved i'm really super cautious

it seems like it would only be the morocco to europe part where the paper tix would be needed and after that (europe to usa) she could get home on e-tix, i'm not too clear on that, but i've only needed paper tickets in africa and never in europe, haven't done spain or morocco either tho so i'm a bit out on a limb here
