Anyone Else Here Know Someone Who Had Surgery and then Blood Clot?
I have a friend in the hospital who had shoulder surgery and then had a blood clot that has ended up in her lung. I think she seems to be doing better now - after a few tense days.

What is her prognosis? Anybody know anything about this? What are the long term effects?

1. Sounds like they caught her in time
She will likely be on blood thinners for awhile.

One of my girlfriends slipped and compound fractured her arm (pretty major injury). Four days later she died because she had a blood clot that traveled to her lung.

2. My brother
He was in the hospital in Israel at the end of January and was having a procedure done on an old tracheotomy wound. He developed an embolism in his lung and, unfortunately, he wasn't as lucky as your friend and he died.

3. Cumoden is her friend
Or however it's spelled. My father went on blood thinners immediately after heart cathedration for a blocked artery and some other clot busting medication whose name escapes me. It's not uncommon on those meds to see a little bleeding in areas where the blood vessils are in close proximity to the surface of the skin, such as the gums in your mouth and the lips. Totally normal to see a little bleeding in these areas.

The danger is in clots reaching the heart (infarction) or the brain (stroke). I'd be more worried about stroke, and her physicians will have to keep a careful watch on her for the next 72 hours.

4. Clots that reach the lung are often deadly as well.

5. It's been about 5 days I think since the clost moved thru her
system.

She seemed a lot better yesterday. Was not as swollen up and finally got her appetite back.

She was supposed to be in the hospital for 3 days. This is day 7. Her surgery was fine but she almost died.

Scares the beegeezus out of me.

6. I am so glad
Like I said, pulmonary embolism is often a fatal thing.

Sounds like she is out of the woods.

 to you and her.

7. Thankyou. I'm on my way to the hospital right now.
She's a strict Catholic. Any prayers would be appreciated.
