My sister passed away last night

I got the call at about 5 this morning at work. She was diagnosed with lung and liver cancer a month ago and is now gone. Boom. The good thing is that she went quietly in her sleep - I'm grateful for that but sad that I didn't get to see her again. I was planning a trip out to do so - she went so fast.

Today was also my last day with the best boss I've ever had - our manager has transferred to another store. I'm philosophical about comings and goings at work but this man was special and I'll miss him dreadfully. He's my friend as well as my boss and though I hope to see him still now and then, it's not the same as having that every day interaction.

Rough day. We need a smiley that has a dark cloud hanging over it.

My mom passed away with ovarian cancer 8 years ago and I still miss her and sometimes will see a woman who sort of looks like her and feel she's with me at times. She had a hard life after birthing all 6 of us kids. Family is important and know that your mom will always be in your heart. Hugs and prayers from me.

losing a loved one is never easy, losing one to quickly is even worse.

And it does sometimes seem that things pile on all together. I'm very tough and no one at work has ever seen me cry (I know that it's perfectly all right to cry but I'm constitutionally unable to do it). It was not easy to hold it together today, especially when my boss gave me a hug and told me how sorry he was and how much he'd miss me. :(

I think I remember you posting about her diagnosis recently. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Yes, it was very quick. I have my daughter's wedding to attend in Minnesota next weekend and I planned on continuing out to Vermont to see my sister. ~sigh~ I will still go - it will be good to go home for a visit and the plans are all in place. It's hard to be so far away when things like this happen.

I wish there was something to say at times like these that would make things better. I hope you are at peace with situation you now find yourself in, and know that in time the pain will ease.

A tradition with native americans is to remember those who have crossed over by "thinking of them in a good way" whenever they cross your mind. That way you keep the essence of what is good about a loved one close to your heart.

That's a nice tradition. I've always felt strongly that as long as a person is remembered, they're never fully dead. That's one reason I enjoy old cemeteries - I like to look at the names and say them out loud. Makes me feel that I'm giving them a whiff of life in a way. :hug:

Not to impart a whiff of life, but in case a spirit is lingering I acknowledge their life. For some reason I feel that those whom may choose to linger are lonely.

You can be thankful that it was peaceful.

Tough times. I hate losing a valued coworker/friend.

I lost my oldest brother by a heart attack in 2001. Life after can be good but never is the same.

I know what you're going through- I lost my big brother in '88. He passed on my birthday.

The pain will recede in time, and you'll remember only the best of her life. Hold that thought close to you and it will help you get through this time.

I lost a younger brother some 10 years ago. He was only 34 and it still hurts.
Time does heal a little bit. Just think of all the good times from when she was with us.

Everyone's favorite congressman (DK) and I were with him the day he was diagnosed...

We talked, laughed and generally took his mind off things...

That's when I realized how precious life is...

Like your sister, the cancer took him fast....

My (non-smoker) grandmother developed lung cancer when I was living 2,000 miles away. I also made plans to go home, but didn't make it in time. It's hard to believe how deadly certain cancers can be.

Lost my dad last year to liver cancer. Thankfully, he went quickly without a lot of pain, like your sister. I miss going to Las Vegas with him! He was the most easygoing guy ever. He stayed with my partner and I and never thought a thing about it. I think I know what you are going through - at least a little. Hang in there! The memories get sweeter, but the loss sticks with you.

A good friend of mine died a couple of months ago from liver and lung cancer. It started in her liver and spread to her lungs. She went quickly. She got up to go the bathroom and just keeled over and died. She was only 54. And my sister, who was also 54, died a few years ago from kidney cancer.
