Germany was divided in to two sections, West Germany and East Germany. How many of you personally remember this?

What were the real names of the countries?

4. Federal Republic of Germany and German Democratic Republic.
Bundesrepublik Deutschland (West) and Deutsche Demokratische Republik (East) were the formal titles.

Reunification was effected by East Germany disbanding and its constituent laender joining "West" Germany, so the formal title of the whole is still Bundesrepublik.

the two separate sections became united again. The separation happened in 1949. I do remember it. :hi:

6. I remember this.
My parents visited the wall before it fell. My Dad visited Germany, as a student, just after WWII, so was always very interested in seeing the changes that took place there, over the years. He had many stories about his initial visit to Germany, like staying in a lovely hotel in Munich, which had the first eight floors completely shot out...:-(

And East Germany was known, ironically, as the German Democratic Republic and West Germany was the Federal Republic of Germany.:-)

7. Nearly went through the East.
Back in the 80's when I was a poor traveller, a German chica I met in Greece invited me to come to Berlin. I was going to hitch through East Germany - supposedly one ride from the border got you through. However, I sat in Switzerland in dumb love (and am still embarrassed about it). There was a lot of creative energy at the time with the squats.

8. I remember it...
but I was a punk kid back then, not really aware of world events. When I saw it on the evening news, I was like "OK, cool, now I got more important stuff to do, like hang out."
