What a Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong
Edited on Wed Dec-10-03 11:00 PM by Booberdawg
Anyone LOVE this song as much as I do?

Can you find me the words?

on edit: I buried my son with this song. It just speaks of him and how he affected others around him.

That was 5 years ago. I just wanted to hear it tonight and speak the words with it. This song just rocks my soul.

I see trees of green........ red roses too
I see ’em bloom..... for me and for you
And I think to myself.... what a wonderful world.

I see skies of blue..... clouds of white
Bright blessed days....dark sacred nights
And I think to myself .....what a wonderful world.

The colors of a rainbow.....so pretty ..in the sky
Are also on the faces.....of people ..going by
I see friends shaking hands.....sayin’.. how do you do
They’re really sayin’......i love you.

I hear babies cry...... I watch them grow
They’ll learn much more.....than I’ll never know
And I think to myself .....what a wonderful world

(instrumental break)

The colors of a rainbow.....so pretty ..in the sky
Are there on the faces.....of people ..going by
I see friends shaking hands.....sayin’.. how do you do
They’re really sayin’...*spoken*(I ....love....you).

I hear babies cry...... I watch them grow
*spoken*(you know their gonna learn
A whole lot more than I’ll never know)
And I think to myself .....what a wonderful world
Yes I think to myself .......what a wonderful world.

4. THANKS!
I just listened to this CD against the words and they are not exact, but close enough. Some of them are WAY off.

This is an important song for me

5. Well, it is jazz, after all
He probably performed it somewhat differently each time.

Man, I wish I had been around to see him perform in his prime. :D

10. Oh, me too
What I would give watch him do this song in person right now.

What I would give to just be face to face with him right now. it would be priceless.

Every little hair on my body is standing straight out as I type this. :nuke:

6. Well, I used to like it...

...but some son of a bitch had to graft Kenny G over the original recording. And wouldn't you know, the Lite Rock radio station they play at work all day has the remix in its regular rotation.

Makes me sick every time I hear Kenny G puking all over what used to be a nice record. :puke:

I hate ruined classics. Some guy I used to work with played Kenny G all the time, when he wasn't playing Sarah Brightman, and thought he was very sophisticated because he was listening to "classical music."

Barf.

9. Pat Methaney wrote an article a few years ripping Kenny G
Edited on Wed Dec-10-03 10:58 PM by soupkitchen
for having the audacity to put his third rate talent on the same record with Louie Armstrong. His basic point was, "Hey Kenny, it's ok that you suck and make a lot of money, good for you, but when you dare to couple yourself with one of the Gods, if not THE GOD, then you insult real musicians everywhere and you can go fk yourself, asshole.

7. great song by THE most significant influence on American music . . .
in the 20th century . . . Pops influenced everyone, whether they play jazz, blues, popular tunes, or even rock . . . a genuine musical genius, who also happened to be one hell of a character . . . toked up every day, don'tcha know, and the stories about him and his Swiss Kriss (a laxative!) are legend . . . I LOVE Louis (and it's Louis, not Louie!) and most everything he ever recorded . . .

12. My Hands Down Favorite Song
During Desert Storm, just after the liberation of Kuwait City we all realized we were going home - safe and sound and were proud of what we did. The unit I was with was ordered back to Saudi Arabia fairly quickly and a very large convoy was formed at the International Airport (parked and ready to roll south). Somehow, someway (till this day I do not know why or who), someone had set up an audio system that could be heard for what seemed miles. As we sat in our humvees, trucks, etc - all of a sudden (with no prior songs or warning that music would signal our departure) Satchmo's What a Wonderful World seemed to float across the world as we knew it. It was the most wonderful feeling. To this day this song has a special place in my heart. When I got back stateside I was playing What a Wonderful World on my stereo and my, then 2 year-old, daughter came toddling in and said 'that's the pretty song'....

Just me and Marie's cats. I'm sure if I heard it during spring time I'd have a better sentiment. Or, I can just imagine the scenes during "Good Morning Vietnam" when the song was played.

What reason do you think? I'm curious.

25. Great song and performance.
A few years ago I went to see a middle school concert because my goddaughter was performing. This was one of the songs the chorus performed. Her father told me the music teacher had to tell the boys not to try to do the Armstrong version of the song. I could just imagine all these little kids trying to sing with a gravelly voice.

29. the odd thing about WAWW...
...is that most of the jazz musicians I know (and I have a lot of them as friends) do not like that song and do not like to play it. They think of it as being on a par with "Bill Bailey won't you please come home." I guess, probably, because they get so many requests for it and it is a simple melody with little challenge or chord changes.

We like it, but a lot of them don't.

Pops, you know, is considered to have sold out for part of his career. Gone commercial, as they say. The whole Hello Dolly period of his career offends some musicians, as they consider his unmatchable cutting edge talent and genius.

33. It is a sad song, depending your perspective
I do consider it a happy song, believe it or not.

Armstrong survived some hard knocks and that only makes this song the more special. It's about the simple things in life and just sitting back and smelling the roses. Or tghe coffee, or whatever, it's a beautiful song.

Believe it or not, the most moving rendition of this song I ever heard was by Rolf on the "Muppet Show". He was singing it to a REAL puppy, not a muppy. It was adorable. He changed the word "babies" to "puppies". Real sobber. And a big, tough guy like me, too....... :-)

39. Heard it live at the Detroit Jazz Festival
A few years ago. It was at night and I was surrounded by thousands of people ofall races and ages. Beautiful, warm night. And the local musician (Marcus Belgrave who used to play trumpet with Ray Charles) sounds just like Satchmo. Very moving experience. I always think of that night when I hear that song.
