How do you count "points" on a buck?

I ask because I just watched this big guy go by the fence here, under the watchful eye of this massive pack of Siberian Huskies I'm taking care of this week.

I counted five points on each side, so is that a "five-pointer?"

Amazing how little he cared about all the "wolves" watching him. Also amazing how interested the huskies were....I wonder if it was "hey, food on the hoof" thinking, or "hey, we should play with that really big dog out there".... :shrug:

it's total points, sometimes they aren't even, can have 9 points

I'm so ignorant about some things... this in particular is a silly thing to be ignorant about, around here. So is it just an age thing, or are bucks with more points tastier, or something?

I'm not a hunter, but have watched enough hunting shows to know that is a majorly big deer.

I don't know how my Sibes would react, I don't think they have ever seen anything that big, on the hoof. Squirrels however, are their nemesis.

What you so was a "ten-point" in the south and east, or a "Western five-point". I would have called it a five-by-five.

Really experienced hunters would try to estimate the actual score of the animal, such as a "one-fifty class".

early this morning i watched 5-6 deer in the pasture next to mine. when my dogs saw them and barked they ran like the wind away from my property.

its a 10 pointer, but some folks count bumps as points, especially out west. back east they are a bit more rigorous about what is and is not a "point."

would be a 10 pointer unless he had a drop horn or dog catchers.

where I buy corn and Antlermax in Menard Co. Tx. It is $25 to enter. Whoever kills the biggest Boone and Crocket scored deer wins a very nice rifle with a scope. I believe the rifle is worth about $850. The deer has to be killed in Menard Co. Tx. They have some polaroid pics on the wall of the leaders so far. There is a 16 pointer up there. That deer has to be very old. Imagine how many does he has mated with and passed on those antler genetics to ! Usually one that large is the dominant buck for that area unless he is so old a younger deer can beat him up when they fight for breeding rights. The winner gets to breed ALL the does. They only go into the rut once a year so the competition is extremely tough for who gets the ladies. It is nature's way of making sure only the strongest survive. The fittest animals will keep the species going. I love deer hunting.
