Are we on the DU, the majority or minority of our party?
Most the talking heads out there are claiming a major fault line between the Dean democratic party vs. the Clinton democratic party. One has to wonder if the progressive side of the party, to which I consider myself (and I believe most DUers)are the bigger portion of the Democratic voting block, or will a Clinton endorsed candidate be more popular with the party? Will the rift show up in 2004 as bitterness and lack of voting if the Clinton backed candidate gets trounced by Dean. That, of course, would be a nightmare, but if one reads the op-ed pages, that seems to be the track our party is running on.:donut:

1. Vast minority I´m afraid...
Democrats are way too fragmented to get anywhere. As much as it pains me to type that, I feel it´s the sad truth.

4. But if Dean gets the nod...
...as it appears he will for the democratic nomination, doesn't that mean that the majority voted the same as us? I'm not saying that all on this board are Dean fans, but many are, and many that say they support Clark would also support Dean if he got the nomination. I believe now that Gore has thrown his support behind Dean, he will force the Clintons to do the same with their candidate, (whom ever that might be). I thought the Clintons were backing Clark, but I'm not so sure what they are up to now.

5. There are really two questions to ask.
Are Dean supporters a majority in the Democratic party and can Dean win the election? I think Dean supporters will carry him to the nomination. My fear is that the Dean supporters will back off on their support when he inevitably tries to move to the center to attract swing voters and moderates. If the most rabid Dean supporters in terms of donations abandon him once he starts to moderate his positions he will be in trouble.

8. That would be devasting to the party.
We will need every vote we can get in a very tough race to begin with. But as you say, and I see it too, Dean starts catering heavily to the center to attract the moderate side of the party, he may lose a portion of his constituence. There is no easy answers I guess. I think we can beat shrub, but this one will have to be played with a lot of finesse. The battle of the parties titans don't help much either.

6. Minority
Du tends to be much more left-wing than the rest of the party and the country in general.

7. Minority
The majority of the Dems are center-left but the folks at DU tend to be solid leftists to the point among a minority here of being completely dogmatic.

10. it was my understanding...
that the Clintons are holding their endorsments until after the primary. That is, that they will support the majority elected Democrat. At this point, with current polls, it looks like Dean is that candidate, so maybe there isn't a rift between Dean and Clinton.

11. I'm not so sure...
I believe that if Dean wins, the influence the Clintons have in the party will be diminished. I don't think they are going to allow that to happen sitting down.
