Anyone else as stoked about this as I am? It is easily the greatest sporting event on the planet.

Who you cheering for? Since Canada hasn't qualified for a World Cup since - - well I don't think they ever have, I will be cheering for the country of my parent's birth...

1. I am looking forward to it.
Got DVD this time around, so I don't have to get up at 2-3 in the morning to watch. And while I usually avoid rooting for the USA in any sport, I will for the World Cup because we are just so fucking pathetic in this sport.

2. I am stoked.
Gotta admit though, the US drew just about the worst collection of teams in Group E.

We're going to be humiliated. I hope the US team got a good deal on airfare.

At which point all my love goes to Portugual.

3. DVD is a good idea...
but I will probably stay up to watch them. I liked it when it was in the US, not that I thought the US seserved to host it but they games were actually on at a decent hour (for me).
The last time around we were in the pub at 7:30 in the morning watching the games. It was actually pretty cool being there at that time, getting breakfast and a pint. The place was packed!

The US totally got shafted on the grouping, you're right, it's going to be an early exit for them

Truth be told I don't think Germany is going to get out of the 1st round. I really hope I'm wrong about that.

6. The competition's results have far-reaching political impact
Edited on Thu Jun-01-06 02:37 PM by Orrex
Sec. Rumsfeld has bet heavily on the World Cup and, in a money-glazed frenzy, he runs into the Oval Office to gloat.

"The French are being killed by the Brazilians," he tells the President, who's been feeling glum about his ever-sinking poll numbers.

"You're just trying to cheer me up," sez the Prez. "There aren't a brazillion French in the whole world."

15. Stick around--variations of the Brazillions joke are legion
And they're the very soul of brilliance, IMO.

I would be delighted if you were to use my version of it--thanks for asking!

USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA!

Failing that, I got nobody. I can't do like the OP and root for my ancestors' team, because almost all of my ancestors are Irish, and they didn't make the cut.
