Best PIANO ("keyboards," my ass!) player, jazz era?
See my signature. ;)

I also like, oh, Tristano, Tatum, all those guys.....But from the more recent players, Bill is king.

:hi:

1. Teddy Wilson.
Fats Waller and Art Tatum, definitely. Duke Ellington as well. But Teddy Wilson, wow, I just love his light touch.

Terrific song.

I really like the MIDI file of it found here. Scroll down to "Jazz," and then "Dave Brubeck." "Take Five" is right there.

;)

7. Cool. Thanx!....
If you haven't already heard this check out "The Spirit of KJAZ". Its a Shoutcast jazz station out of SanFran. They play some really good stuff. You need to have WinAmp installed, then search the shoutcast stations for "kjaz". You won't regret it.

11. I like Brubeck a lot, but....
I can't remember who said this, but he was once compared to the spaz who makes the varsity basketball team, not out of any real talent, but from hard work, determination, and sheer force of will. That's kind of how I look at his piano-playing skills. He's certainly not what you'd call a "natural" like Tatum or Monk or a hundred other guys.

Paul Desmond, OTOH, is in my top five alto sax players.

10. Depends on my mood...
Edited on Sat Jun-03-06 08:15 PM by Arkham House
...but if you put a gun to my head, I'd have to say it's the guy in your signature photo. An amazing artist, whom I was fortunate enough to see in person. Other times, I'd be inclined to say Monk--for his sheer purity of jazz intent--Bud Powell, for his remarkable inventiveness and role in the Bop Era, jazz's greatest moment...and Keith Jarrett, whose "Coln Concerts" is the greatest solo piano album there is. But Bill Evans hits me where I live... Incidentally, the fact that such a really bright kid has his signature pic there and loves jazz is something I find very heartening...:-)...

He was Coltrane's child.

I've seen him live. He's tremendous.

13. Monk.

And Ellington (if you haven't heard it, check out 'Money Jungle'. Ellington, Charles Mingus, and Max Roach. Ellington's playing really comes to the fore in a way it doesn't on his big-band recordings, and there's some serious tension between Duke and Mingus that both play off of with sometimes startling results.)

And, of course, Bill Evans. I can't really decide between the three of them.

16. The new "Monk" is Jason Moran
Have seen him play several times.

Has done some great stuff, some crazy cutting edge tunes with tapes
but also some very smooth sentimental pieces.

17. my first thought was Teddy Wilson
My second thought was Ellington. Of course, there's Earl Hines and Jelly Roll Morton and so many others.....argh! An impossible task.

Can't forget Lalo Schifrin either.

Schifrin's famous for composing the theme to the show "Mission: Impossible".
