Mele Kalikimaka
Mele Kalikimaka is the thing to say,
On a bright Hawaiian Christmas Day,
That's the island greeting that we send to you
From the land where palm trees sway,
Here we know that Christmas will be green and bright,
The sun to shine by day and all the stars at night,
Mele Kalikimaka is Hawaii's way
To say "Merry Christmas to you."

From the land where palm trees sway,
Here we know that Christmas will be green and bright,
The sun to shine by day and all the stars at night,
Mele Kalikimaka is Hawaii's way
To say, "Merry Christmas,
A very Merry Christmas to you."

1. LOL
Aloha, from the lovely state of Hawaii.

See all the waterfalls

Would you like to know the weather here?

It is sunny and the wind is blowing from the NorthEast at about 10 m.p.h. I am assuming the temp is 85 degrees Farenheit outside. :-)

13. I saw Don Ho with my parents in the late 1970s.
I guess I was about 11. He couldn't even finish the songs, he was so toasted. His female "helpers" had to sing the songs for him.

I hope he's dried out by now. :D

16. Let's not forget "Da Numbah One Day of Christmas"
the partridge-in-a-pear-tree classic, rendered in Pidgin (Hawai'i Creole English to you linguists):

http://www.melekalikimaka.com/12days.htm

Numbah One Day of Christmas
(The 12 Days of Christmas local style)
- by Eaton B. Magoon Jr., Edward Kenny, Gordon N. Phelps

Numbah One day of Christmas, my tutu give to me
One mynah bird in one papaya tree.

Numbah Two day of Christmas, my tutu give to me
Two coconut, an' one mynah bird in one papaya tree.

Numbah Tree day of Christmas, my tutu give to me
Tree dry squid, two coconut,
An' one mynah bird in one papaya tree.

Numbah Foah day of Christmas, my tutu give to me
Foah flowah lei, tree dry squid, two coconut,
An' one mynah bird in one papaya tree....

Mele Kalikimaka a me Hau'oli Makahiki Hou! (the last part means "and Happy New Year")

18. "Foah flowah lei"
H. Allen Smith, a humorist of the 40s through the 70s wrote a book called "Waikiki Beachnik" in 1960.
In it he tells about a special lei he had made for a friend's birthday. There was an old lady lei-maker with a stand near his hotel. He had to pay her triple to make a beautiful lei, fashioned entirely out of condums.

Jimmy Buffett does a great cover of the song on his album "Christmas Island"
