What's your favorite non-English language musical CD?
I'd say Juana Molina's Tres Cosas. She has a new CD out called Son that I'll look into.

Maya Soleil is Afro-jazz fusion and local to Woodinville, WA. Their shows are worth whatever it takes to get there, and the CD is excellent!

17. A compilation by 60s chanteuse France Gall
Edited on Wed Jun-07-06 12:53 AM by tuvor

Just a random purchase one day that changed my musical tastes...

She sings some Serge Gainesburger songs, and some faux-jazzy numbers, including a knockoff-with-vocal of Take Five. I think she won a Eurovision contest, too, despite her flat singing. (Check YouTube.)

I'd say she's a hottie, too, but using that term got me a bunch of grief in GD.

EDIT: Oh, yeah, at one point my cousin was going to the same hairdresser as Ms. Gall was. Now aren't you glad you know that?

However my favorite cd right now is this one:

I LOVE Otsuka ai...she is so sweet, and her songs range from hard rock to funny. Her song
3 min ramen is so funny, once you translate the words. I simply love her.

dai suki day yo!!

You can see her preform by going to Youtube.com and do a search for Otsuka ai.

If I had to pick a second group its the late great
DO AS INFINITY...THEY WERE ONE OF JAPAN'S TOP SELLING GROUPS

Van Tomiko has a voice close to the late Karen Carpenter...only in Japanese..
Their music was so unique...If they had been a US band, they would be up there
with FLEETWOOD MAC! You can also see DO AS INFINITY and VAN TOMIKO on YOUTUBE.COM

You know, they say music is a language all itself. You can listen to DO AS INFINITY
and just feel the pureness of harmony..and the "good feel" vibes coming from them. Like I said had they been a US band they would be giving Fleetwood Mac a run for their money. Excellent band.
I too was sad to hear them breaking up. But Tomiko Van is making singles now...and her sound
is Jazz..not a bad way for her to go. Check out Do As Infinity on Youtube.com. You will see an excellant band that could have had world wide superstar status.

TOMIKO VAN's first solo CD

One more thing, ya know, during the 1960s there was the "British invasion" of the Beatles, Rolling Stones and such. With Anime becoming more and more popular though the Anime Network, The Cartoon Network, and such, ANIME music and JPOP is flowing into America's conciousness..there may well be a day when groups like Asian Kung Fu Generation, L'arc en Ciel, Orange Range and popular singers like:

Aya Ueto, Koda Kumi, Aya Matsuura, Utada Hikaru, Bonnie Pink, Halcali, Bennie K, Kotoko, Edo Boys, Nao Nagasawa, Mari Iijima, The Pillows, BoA, Yuki Kajiura, Core of Soul, Nami Tamaki, Rie Tanaka, Yozucka, Hitomi Mieno, Maki Goto, Mini Moni, Morning Musune, Morning Musume, Hitomi Shimatani, Kawabe Chieko, Megumi Hayashibara, S.E.S., Shiina Ringo, Rina Aiuchi, Puffyamiyumi and other Asian superstars make their appearance on American radio. Its just a matter of time before people discover just how good these talented people are.

21. Shakira "?Donde Estan Los Ladrones?"
She was way better back then. I've been listening since 98. Thanks to my Mexican friends who turned me on to her. I don't even speak Spanish, but, damn, that's a great album. The previous one, with the single "Estoy Aqui" is also good.

The best "spanish rock" album I've ever heard, really. I love every single song on it, and that's a rare occurrence (for me, anyway).

Julieta Venegas' "Si" (2003) is my current favorite.

23. "Princesses Nubiennes" by Les Nubians ...
Les Nubians are two Afro-French women who sing in French and sometimes in English.

I know squat about world music, but I'd describe them as a French analog to Sade.

30. Os Mutantes
Their second album, entitled Mutantes. Yes, it's Portuguese for "mutants."

Imagine that there was another Beatles album between Magical Mystery Tour and the white album (in other words, imagine that the Yellow Submarine LP was something they produced with as much attention and instrumental resources as Sgt Pepper), and imagine further that it's as much a concept album as Sgt Pepper but in a purely musical fashion, where motifs and instruments repeat between songs and foreshadow each other, and with that over-the-top generosity of lush timbres and genre references, and now translate the whole shebang into Portuguese. That's what this sounds like.
