2. Other ~ 6 tattoos

I need a cup of coffee and a bit of time to tell you about all of them.
I'll be back later today after I play with my digital camera for show (almost all  modesty forbids full disclosure) and tell.

38. Every picture tells a story ~
Tattoo #2 is a Snowy Owl on my left shoulder. Many years ago while walking my puppy through Great Kills Park every morning I noticed a large while bird down near the beach. I visited everyday for weeks before our local paper published the information about it's visit. It was a magical time in my life.

Tattoo #3 & #4 are combined here ~ I thought the hummingbird looked lonely so I added a Heavenly Blue Morning Glory.

The Phoenix is tattoo #5. I do feel a sense of rebirth.

I just found out that my little gecko ~ tattoo #6 will need more work after it's healed.
It seems that shapes need an outline to keep the ink in place. I didn't know that.

I'm having tattoo #1 & #3 redone next Thursday instead of this afternoon.

7. Life's rich pagent
Some decorate themselves w/ makeup and jewelry, some with fancy clothes, leather shoes. Some wear ribbons and bows and clips in their hair. Others adorn themselves with what they drive.

I know you don't care what others do, so I'm not picking on you.

I just think it's silly that just another decoration gets so frowned upon.

27. There are those who think grafitti is decoration!
Thanks for understanding MissMillie, your post is spot on, sum it up to "different strokes for different folks"

Art has always been subjective, I do care what others do and tats dont bother me at all, I am not one of the judgemantal ones. I fully support free expression and folks right to it. I have seen some trully remarkable art, and respect those who produce and choose it.

Tats have been in use for many centuries in one form or another so I feel it is uniquely human and thats good enough for me.

I was surprised to find out haw many thought I was a degenerate for wearing long hail in the 60's

To Art, to Life, Cheers :toast:

permanent body art and I must admit that I have seen so many that they have lost their appeal to me. Still I like to hear the stories...and there is this kind of fatal attraction...
the ones I am seeing here today seem tasteful and meaningful...

5. Lower back
backside of my right hip.

It is a celtic sign, meaning infinity. I got it when I was an intern in Savannah, GA. Every time I went to the Riverside I passed the tattoo shop. One day towards the end of my stay I grabbed my bf and dragged him to the shop. I just wanted to look and see how expensive it is and what I could get. I ended getting the above shown tattoo. As I paid with my credit card and my mom got the bills she asked me one time when she called why I spend so much money (I didn't, I tried to stay in my limit). Her "And what is that? $50 California Tattoo?"
Me "I got a tattoo"
She blasted off. After she let off some steam
Me "Are you mad that I paid so much money or that I got a tattoo"
Her "That you paid so much money. What did you get?"

28. I wasn't really trying to make a point
I was just musing on when few westerners had them, and one would get done with its shock value very much in mind. That would have quite probably been the point. It is completely different now that all sorts of people have them. The shock value has completely disappeared, and it's all about aesthetics instead.

:hi:

He spent about 60 hours doing the Crucifixion on this guy's back. It was amazing. The tattoo looked just like a print of the painting.

46. I know he had it on his old website.
Unfortunately, he doesn't really do tattooing anymore. He works for a plastic surgeon making obscene amounts of cash in Manhattan doing "permanent makeup." He'll do the occaisional tattoo for friends, even though he no longer owns a studio.

I'll see if I can get a copy of the picture though.

51. Most of it is pretty lame.
Occaisionally, he does something with real merit. If a woman has reconstructive surgery after a mastectomy, often they'll get the new nipple tattooed to match the other nipple. I think that's a pretty non-lame cosmetic tattoo. At the very least, he's really good at it. I've seem some horrible permanent makeup jobs, but he does a good job of accentuating your natural looks, so it doesn't look like your face is tattooed like a clown.

10. I have six
I have six tattoos. A fiery wrist ban, a grim reaper, a flaming ying yang/peace type tat, a rose, a scorpion, and a demon tearing through my skin. All are located somewhere on my arms.

The wrist ban was a freebie, a good friend of mine was learning how to do tats and I was his practice skin. H did a heck of a job too!

Grim reminds me that death will become me one day.

The ying yang/peace tat is just to cool.

The rose was my first tat ever at age 18, it was cheap and I didn't have a lot of money at the time.

The scorpion because I am a scorpio.

The demon because it went well with the rose.

11. Definitely not.
I really dislike them, I think that they disfigure the human body - which is one of the greatest works of art which can be imagined.

That said - that's just my opinion, I've got absolutely nothing against other people having them. Whatever floats your boat.

35. Other--I have 7 tattoos.
In order of getting them....

Celtic Triskele w/tribal: Got this after my 18th birthday, but had the design for about a year. It's my biggest tattoo and it's on my lower back. You know, the place where idiots believe you're a tramp if you have one there. The triskele represents my Irish heritage and the three elements of the Celtic universe: land, sea & sky. Done in all black.

Balance kanji w/traditional Japanese sunrays and ocean waves around it: Right above my right ankle. I got the kanji for "balance" because I think balance is a good thing to have in your life. Something I need half the time. This is my only tattoo with color, as the waves are done in blue. I think I may go back and get the sun rays done in color, too.

Om inside a "tribal" sun: On the base of my neck. I got Om because it basically represents everything. I got the sun around it because I liked it. Unlike most tribal, the sun is not solid black and it is shaded instead.

Triquerta: Pointing towards my hand on my left forearm. Once again, representing my Irish heritage along with the traditional protection, trinity, and feminine energy. Shaded blackwork.

Barbed wire armband: Upper right arm. I liked it. I did not get it all the way around because of the plan for tattoo #7.

Triquerta (again): Pointing upwards on my right forearm. Same meaning as the first. Having one up and one down on both arms looks very nice & balanced.

Kanji for 'strength': Inside my armband. It's done pretty large for a single kanji symbol. This is the tattoo that taught me tattoos an inch away from your armpit are HELL to put it lightly. This was done for two reasons. The first being that it's in a hidden spot because I'm a lot stronger than I look. The second is both times I broke something on another person, it was with a punch from my right arm.

41. I have one above my left ankle

Means dream. Got it done for my 20th birthday, my SO paid for it. Was done by a friend, and unfortunately I have a little scar tissue on part of it (my fault not his). I almost had colour added to it, but I'm glad I ended up not doing that. It was done here in my apartment after my SO and his buddy got off of work.

I plan to get another one for my cousin & older brother, both deceased. After that, who knows? My mom and I have been thinking of getting matching tattoos, now that she finally got her first!

42. I have one on my ankle.
I got it in two parts. For my 50th birthday I got a dragonfly tattoo on my ankle. I wanted to spiff it up later and had a triple moon put "behind" it. I'm thinking about putting some sort of a celtic band all the way around, but not quite sure exactly what or when.

When I was growing up my parents had a cabin on a lake and my best memories are being there fishing and hiking and getting acquainted with frogs and lizards and bugs, and dragonflies just remind me of happy summer days. The moon in its three phases because it's pretty and reminds me that most of what happens in life is "just a phase."

Sometimes I'm a bit scandalized myself, but I spent half a century trying to live up to other people's expectations of me, and I still do to a greater extent than I like, so the tattoo was a bit of a "bugger off" to the rest of the world.
