Deutschland v. Costa Rica (WORLD CUP)
Let me kick off (ahem) the greatest sporting event on the planet with this initial thread. We are about 2 1/2 hours away from the beginning of the 2006 World Cup.

First game: Deutschland v. Costa Rica. I'm rocking my Germany jersey, and, as my main man Ice Cube once said, once again, it's on.

Look forward to USA v. Czech Republic, Monday, and the sure-to-be-nasty USA v. Italia game, to be broadcast on ABC next Saturday at 3 pm.

A month of pure pleasure awaits. Don't bother with the Simpson's cracks about footie. Like the goggles, "zey do nuzzing!"

2. ESPN2...but you'll surely also get it on any Spanish language channel
When I was growing up, we had no cable, and we watched all the World Cup games on the Spanish language channel. I think a lot of Americans did, which is why the guy yelling GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!!!!! is so famous. Our Spanish language channel (I grew up in NYC) was out of Patterson, New Jersey, and I'll always remember the station identifications during the Copa Mundial: Patterson, New Yersey.

17. If I recall they were on at 3 and 5AM
I had my best friend Fed Ex me the tape from our apartment to me, we were at the beach. I already knew who had won but I wanted to see. All of our friends thought I was crazy but I sat and watched it.

Same friend who sent me the tape worked at a health club that was open 24 hours. Apparently they had to change hours to accommodate the crowd that rolled in at 2:45 everymorning. They would all sort of act like they were riding bikes, drink coffee, and watch the games. Then they would go home and watch the second game while they were having breakfast or getting ready for work. He thought it was hilarious it was as if they didn't want anyone to know that they were coming really just to watch the game and so they wouldn't wake up everyone in the house. True story.

6 mins: GOAL Germany 1-0 Costa Rica
If the opening goal is a taste of things to come we're in for a cracker over the next month. Full-back Philip Lahm steps in on to his right foot and unleashes a sensational effort from the edge of the area which arrows into the top corner. An untidy passage of playe ended with the ball breaking to the left-back and Danny Fonseca's slip gave him the space to strike on goal. Happy days for the hosts.

The first German goalscorer combines with the second for the a third goal for the host nation. Philip Lahm crosses from the left and, after seeing his initial header parried by Jose Porras, Miroslav Klose rifles in the rebound.

31. Finito
Deutschland 4 Costa Rica 2

Germany's fourth goal came on an unbelievable shot from Torsten Frings in the 86th minute. That about sealed it.

Germany's attack was stron g, but the defense folded a few times, playing silly off-sides traps against the speedy Costa Ricans and getting burned for their efforts, twice. Great start for the tourney.
