They have been domesticated for hundreds of years now. A hyena however is one step from the wild, and responds like a wild animal would. Big, big difference. You treat and train a pit bull properly, and you have a fine friend for life. No matter how much you train and properly care for a wild animal, it could still turn on you at a moments notice.

But pitts have been known to turn for no reason too! That is why they are banned in a lot of places.

Bad PR. It was the same thing with German Shepards, back in the day when they were the "bad boys" of the dog world. I grew up with Shepards, and they were some of the gentlest, most docile dogs around. Same thing applies to Dobermans, who also once enjoyed "bad boy" status and Rotweilers. Sure, if you take any dog, pit bull or poodle, and put it through the insane, torturous regiment that people put dogs through to make them mean or fighters, you're going to wind up with an unpredictable, vicious dog. But if you raise a dog, even a Pit Bull or Rotty, with love and affection, then you are going to wind up with a gentle loving dog who is completely predictable.

It is very rarely the dog or the breed that determines a dog's behavior, it is how they are raised and taken care of. I've had a pit and pit mixes, and they have been nothing but lovable gentle dogs. In fact at one time the AKC and other dog groups recommended pit bulls highly as the ideal family dog. What has been changed between now and then is that more and more idiots are wanting to walk around with vicious dogs on a leash in order to feel like a big man. Thus they torture and torment the dog starting as a pup, and wind up with a vicious beast.

And I don't agree with banning an entire breed, because it isn't the breed of the dog that makes them vicious, it is the idiot human who raises them that way. Give me a teacup chihuahua as a pup, and I can turn them into a vicious killer. Instead of banning certain breeds, let's put the idiots in jail who are raising dogs to be vicious. That would solve the problem a lot better than merely banishing a breed.

You should get on that before I do.
