Need an Honest Opinion On A New Business Venture
Edited on Mon Jun-12-06 10:51 PM by AutumnMist
My husband and I are starting a small venture in historical salvage. I have been working on the web page and I would like some very honest feedback on it. Its not done and I still have some tweaking to do in terms of shipping rates (and the catalog) being listed and so forth. Please post what you think. Historical preservation is a subject very near and dear to my heart. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. :)

1. Please get rid of the audio...
It adds nothing and woke-up my girlfriend. The site actually looks really good.

with something else.

I'm sorry, it looks great. I'm just obsessed with old TV shows tonight. :hide:

4. The products page is still under construction.
I have no idea what you are trying to sell.

Old boards? Dirt?

5. I Am Still Working On It
Edited on Mon Jun-12-06 11:17 PM by AutumnMist
the products that is. Its historical salvage. Doors, fireplace mantels, leaded and stained glass windows. That kind of thing. I could try to sell old dirt...but I think thats called potting soil. :) Do I need to elaborate? If I should tell me. I want this to really be something special. What wording would you change in terms of the description of the business?

On Edit: The page was created this evening. So I still have some things I need to do. Just a base opinion is what I was looking for.

12. Okay.
Your knowledge and imagination are beyond mine.

Will you be selling these items for incorporation into new or existing homes, or as antique collectibles? :)

14. Really
It would be for all of those things, as long as the person buying it could appreciate that my husband and I have taken these items from old historical homes and that the story behind it is so much more than its "pretty". Many antique shops have gouged people. And thats not what I would like to do. This is more of a historical rescue project so to speak. Yes, we will make a profit. But the main goal is to preserve the history and beauty of our older homes and what they have in them. Hence the name Second Chance Salvage.

A small section of some wrought iron that I took home with me this weekend. It may sound like a plain and otherwise blah story...but...there is more to it. There is an old mansion that has stood vacant in 200 acres of corn fields for over 70 years. My nephew and I went to see what kind of shape the house was in. Its destroyed for the most part, mainly due to vandals. There are old pieces of furniture (A buffet table is sitting in the bathroom thats at least 100 years old)that have been left to sit and rot in this house because the land and farming are much more important than the 156 year old home that sits in the middle of the property. The wrought iron was taken down from the roof, its part of the widows walk that lined the upper most section of the roof. The house was built in 1850. Now its scattered, due to vandals, all over the fields and interior sections of the home.

The legend of the house revolves around a southern tobacco farmer that came here from Kentucky. He took his slaves with him into Ohio. Being a free state he encountered many problems trying to keep his slaves in his home and working. According to the newspaper articles that we could find his slaves rebelled and dug themselves out of the servants quarters and beat the owner and escaped to freedom. His daughter and her husband took over the land after she was married and lived there until the late 1800's and by the turn of the century the house was abandoned. The land itself was sold to another family and the house was left empty due to the fact that it was purchased for the land. So my little piece of history is really cool to me. Just this small strip of wrought iron that lined the top of the house that saw so much change. The civil war, slaves finding freedom, etc. So much has changed since the old dame was built. And she still has the beauty of an old house. Just a story to tell in the process. Thats what I love about historical things. The amazing ebb and flow of time. I can only hope to preserve some of this for my daughter and other families. So we all can preserve items that were created in times of new exploration and beginnings. Fascinating.

6. REALLY NICE site. Would love to see it after you are done.
Only suggestion is to add the time zone to the business hours.

Good luck. Sounds like you guys are going to have a great time doing this.

 :hi:

7. I would change the page titles...
If I go to bookmark it.. It says "home." Not very helpful If I go to find the page later in my bookmarks. I would change it to something like, Second Chance Salvage::Home.

And I would see if you can get the background to wrap around the footer. See how the main content abruptly ends with a straight line. It would be nice if you could mimic the curves at the top on the bottom. I hope that was clear.

Is this from a template?

21. I like the style and the photos
It all goes well with the theme of your business. But I'm curious as to who is in the photos and when they were taken. Would you be able to put captions and dates on them?
