1. Yes
Alice wanders around looking confused when she sees suitcases.

The late Ralph used to love it, though, because suitcases made great places to sit/sleep

My cat made the packing difficult because she wanted to see everything.

Your kitties probably miss you!
I talk to all of the animals around here. I think the wild birds have adjusted to having me around, one of the black-capped chickadees has tried to land on me a few times. Hummingbirds will land to eat within three feet of where I'm siting. I'm going to miss all of my creatures this summer.

42. I knew a guy whose cat would poop on his pillow whenever he went away
for more than a few days. And a vet once told me that the reason a cat does that is not to punish the person, but to leave a scent marker so the person can find his way home because the cat thinks his person got lost. Sounds weird; but with cats, who knows?

41. Yes, one my mean ole landlord stole
a few years back when I live in Santa Monica. She looked liked my neighbor's cat who died. I didn't know about it until my neighbor told me that the neighbor's cat was gone but came back. The landlord told her and then he took that cat too. He told me he thought I just had the one cat. Then 2 years ago my other cat had to be put down because of kidney failure. I'm still sad about these events.

Thanks.

Cats are the best at the full ignore mode. Dogs can't hold out.

Frodo was too happy to see me back home last week to bite me. We were all a little surprised at her lack of a bad attitude. The Red-fronted Macaw that lives here would bite her former owner for days after Joanne returned from a vacation.

Osceferia used to pee in my suitcase when I put it on my bed. So I wound up putting her in the bathroom till I was done packing. That was back in the 80's and 90's when there were real jobs for middle America. Some time latter on , she learned to pee and poop in the toilet and never looked back on the litter box.

One time he jumped into the suitcase and just stood there. A few minutes later I heard the sound of squirting water. I said, "Damnit Jim, Scott is pissing in the suitcase." And sure enough. And that cat was ten years old and he had NEVER peed anywhere outside of his litter box, so we knew that he was doing it because he was MAD. Did it right in front of both of us too, as if to say, "SO THERE."

51. Oh yes
Our current dog gets very depressed if he sees a suitcase being packed. And, even if most of the family is remaining in the house, you can tell that he isn't comfortable until all the family have returned home. In fact, when he sees us packing he sometimes goes to the garage and sulks -he won't come out to say goodbye and, when you go to say goodbye to him, he'll have a very sad expression

We had to put our previous dog down when we left our country of residence to come to where we live now-she was old and in poor health. She always got very depressed when we saw us packing and, since the removalists were coming on the day she was going to be put down, we arranged for my sister to take her for a walk so that she wouldn't see the vans coming in and our stuff going out in boxes. Unfortunately the removalists arrived early and she saw it all

53. Very much so!
When I went to CA for a business trip a couple of weeks ago, I set the suitcase on the bed to pack - my Janeway started first to claw at the exterior fabric. I chased her away, and put some lingerie and whatnot in a small zipper compartment - but failed to zip it up. Left the room for 2 minutes to get something from the dryer. When I came back, she had emptied everything from the zipper compartment onto the floor and was sitting inside the suitcase, giving me the "Where the hell do you think you're going this time?" look.

It took her three hours to "talk" to me again when I got home several days later. :D

My kitties will lay down in the suitcase, or on top of it if I close the lid. That, or they'll drape themselves over whatever items/clean clothes I put next to the suitcase for packing.

I takes them about a day after I get back home to fully warm up to me again. I think they're waiting to make sure I'm really going to stay home.

67. Mine becomes very depressed.
He won't get further than 5 ft away from me. He just lays down and stares up at me with his big eyes. In general, he acts very, very depressed.

69. absolutely
i don't think there is any getting around it

bird talk magazine once advised that when you plan to travel, you actually tell the parrot how long you will be gone and count out the days you will be gone showing the number of days with your fingers -- believe chris davis advised this, but i'm not sure now

in any case let them know you will be coming back

in my case they already know that but they still like to give the old hairy eyeball when they see that i am going somewhere

even tho i know they're getting spoiled rotten by the housesitter!

dogs would probably understand if you explained it to them too, hell, they know you're going anyway, i think it's the fact that you at least make an effort to explain and show you respect their concerns that helps -- a little
