I don't get this whole Oasis thing.
Edited on Thu Jun-15-06 12:28 PM by Bornaginhooligan

That's not to say I don't get Oasis. I'm not saying I like Oasis. I'm not saying that if I ever liked Oasis I'd admit it now. But I totally "get" Oasis.

Which means by the transitive property that I also get Oasis jokes. I like Oasis jokes. They leave me with a warm feeling, like tomato and rice soup for the soul.

I also get Oasis running gags, even though I don't understand their origins. It's not difficult to guess how these Oasis running gags got started. So let us perform a simple thought experiment:

Let us suppose that in the dimly lit regions of the far past, some innocent DU member, Person A, posted something favorable about the hit British super-group: The Beatles.

Now then, it us further hypothesize that another DU member, whom we shall call Smartass B, read this message and, being a smartass, mentioned something about the equally successful British super-group: Oasis.

Now we don't know who it was. It could have been Person A, or it could have been Guilty Bystander C, but somebody read Smartass B's message and, falling for it, started a flame-war which irrevoccably altered the landscape of the Lounge forever.

We don't know the details of this flame war. In the ensuing chaos the archives before 2003 were utterly destroyed, like so many papyrus scrolls in the Library of Alexandria. But we can piece together evidence of just how destructive this flame war was. Geologists now believe that it claimed the lives of several hundred DU members, two dozen moderators, a half dozen cats who happened to be sleeping on keyboards of computers logged onto DU, and the enigmatic long lost Fourth Administrator.

But in the same way that the Big Bang created millions and billions of galaxies, and nebulae, and champagne supernovas... this flame-war too created millions and billions of Oasis copycat joke threads, each encircled by a trillion Gallagher brothers jokes. I don't know if there is intelligent life in these Oasis threads, but if there isn't- then that's an awful waste of space.

But that's neither here nor there. The thing that I don't get about this Oasis thing is, in all this talk why is there little focus on the greatest grunge band to come out of Seattle in the 90s:

2. This quote made my day...
"The thing that I don't get about this Oasis thing is, in all this talk why is there little focus on the greatest grunge band to come out of Seattle in the 90s: Bush"

Bravo, sir. Bravo.

27. You could say that Oasis is kind of "ordinary"
Which, in fact, they are.

Ordinary. Nothing more. Nothing less.

The fact that they're in an AT&T commercial vaults them into the realm of bands like ABBA & The Starland Vocal Band.

Oasis might be a bit above average, but not much.

But I do adore Abba. I find the criticism unfounded.

20. But that was not the real Beatles...
Those were impostors - look on the drum, it says "Other Beatles". It doesn't even look like them.

And Oasis are nor "equally successful" to the Beatles, by a long shot.

I'm probably messing with someone's inside joke here, but come on...

21. You are correct. Oasis are more successful than the Beatles.
These are two separate findings:

Oasis' album 'best of all time'

Oasis's album beat the Beatles into second place
Oasis' 1994 debut album, Definitely Maybe, has been voted the greatest album of all time in a music poll.
The album, which featured hits Live Forever and Supersonic, beat the Beatles' Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band into second place.

Oasis top Beatles in album list

Oasis' first album is a favourite of fans and critics
Oasis have beaten their heroes The Beatles to win a poll of the best British albums of all time.
The Britpop band's 1994 debut was voted ahead of the Beatles' 1966 classic Revolver to top the list in Q magazine.

22. The Beatles have outsold Oasis by leaps and bounds
I'm not even a Beatles fan, but compared to Oasis, they are legends.

Oasis is just a pop-rock band, same level as the Stones, or Duran Duran.

24. Listen up now
You need to understand how things work. It is documented - in the public record - that Oasis recorded the greatest album of all time. In legal terms, that means that Oasis is the best band of all time. If you want to sue Oasis on behalf of the Beatles, you better call your accountant. Paul won't give you much support because he divorced without a prenup and is in his typical drug-induced mamma time. Ringo has joined Up With People. John and the other guy are dead.

Considering all of this, I would probably lay off Oasis.

Edited on Fri Jun-16-06 11:52 PM by mvd
But they are not on the level of any of the bands you mentioned IMO. Rolling Stones are one of the very greats.

The Beatles are my favorite band, so I certainly agree with you that Oasis doesn't compare with them.

7. The OP is leveraging Carl's stirling reputation to further their own...
nefarious agenda.

That said, the OP is otherwise well documented. The final conclusion is well
thought out, while at the same time being...

WRONG!

There you have it.

9. If you listen closely you'll notice...
The narration is done by someone through a handkerchief with traffic
noise, what sounds like a day school, and someone looking for a "Maurice"
in the background.

That and Sagan is dead.

Two facts that show this thesis is nothing more than an attempt to redirect
discussion of a worthy topic "Oasis" to *ahem* "Bush".

13. Carl Sagan is not dead.
He just wants the public at large to think he is dead.

He and Tupac Shakur have some unfinished business to take care of.

But I've already said too much.

I use your terms only because I fear you will lose track if I do not.

"Smartass B"

You will find that "Guilty Bystander C" is several, though I will give this post "honorable" mention for at least creating the semblance of research:

"greatest grunge band to come out of Seattle in the 90s..."

Now, it is time to drop the Beatles/Oasis bullshit and accept the true greatness that is...
