Christians - please chime in...
Do you cuss? C'mon, tell the truth!

I let 'em rip - but not from the pulpit.

Seriously, though... and since you're probably the correct person to ask.

I always read the "Thou shall not use the name of thy God in vain" thing, not
as a prohibition on cussing per se. But, as a warning not to invoke the name
of God to accomplish your own dirty work. (Something we see too much these days,
sadly.)

What's your take on it?

16. I think you're spot-on.
To use the name of God vainly, IMO, is to claim you're speaking on behalf of God, when you're really promoting your own personal agenda.

68. And then there's not meaning it...
Much of what passes for genuine cursing is simply colloquial language. "Damn You" as a phrase used when somebody cuts me off on the interstate doesn't mean that I'm wishing eternal hellfire and damnation on that guy in the blue Chevy Malibu. I'm just transiently pissed off. I say it, but I don't even mean it.

5. Heck, yeah!
There is a time for swearing, and a time for shutting the f_k up. (Mark's book of Proverbs, Unpublished).

I'm also a Christian who got slaughtered at the Student Union frequently. Go to the Christian Union meet, then go to the Union, and get completely drunk. Even more proof is my wife; she went to a catholic college/university and let's say that there's plenty of illicit liquor and beer there.

Mark.

20. I'm not a Christian, but one of my women friends is, and an editor
of Christian books for a major press (which I won't mention, just in case). I've always viewed her as somewhat prim and proper. The other day however she appeared at my door with grievances about her boss. Boy, did she let the language fly! I laughed and laughed at her to the point where she got defensive. I couldn't help it. It was really funny.

Edited on Fri Jun-16-06 07:47 PM by txwhitedove
during times of stress. I was taught not to cuss, then married a sailor. Just in observation between offices in Oklahoma-more reserved no cussing, Mississippi-hardly any cussing but a lot of O.M.G.'s, and then Texas-anything goes-be-it-sexist-racist-polemicist-###*&#($&#&&@Q)_*, in the last office so much that my ears blistered and I had to buy my own set of music speakers to drown it out -- and that was the women cussing! IMHO, cussing is not a Christian or religious issue, but a matter of taste, intelligence, maturity, and immediate surroundings-appropriateness.

79. I swear like a fucking sailor. I also...
...make a personal distinction between "taking God's name in vain" and mere profanity.

So "motherfucking sonofabitch asshole cocksucker" whenever I think it fits, but never "Jesus Christ" or "Oh, my God". (Well, almost never.)

81. I cuss well ...

However, I'm no longer a Christian. My religious philosophy is more in line with deism. I was, however, raised a Baptist, and I'm quite certain that led to the level of profanity that flows from my mouth at times.

Such a fucking bullshit question.

Seriously, though, I try not to take the Lord's
name in vain-though, unfortunately, not always
successful.

89. And I don't think that we're going to get another Polish one for some time
We might strike lucky with the Latin Americans - next time it could be "is the Pope Patagonian?"

91. Almost never
When I post on DU, I make sure to censor any foul language in my posts (ie. "pi$$).

The only times I ever curse are when I'm in near car accidents.

94. I didn't until I worked at the company that I just left
My close friend who worked there with me for three years swore as did my closest coworker as did about half the people there. I try not to swear in front of people who don't swear. One time I threw my superviser for a loop though when I said "I have a shit load of work to do today."
I will try not to swear at my new company.
