Saw Mike Doughty (Soul Coughing) last night at the TLA
here in Philly.

It was a good show. He's got a nice band behind him now - upright bass and a terrific drummer (keyboard player too). He threw in some SC - not as much as I would have liked, but his solo work is quite good too. There is a tiny edge of Dave Matthews to his newer stuff that terrifies me, but otherwise...good show.

I was thinking when I left that most of the shows I've been to in my life have been neither fantastic nor horrible - most have been simply solid performances by experienced touring artists. And as I get older, I actually prefer that to the sweaty ecstatic overwhelming concert experiences of my misspent youth. :) I don't have to throw my clothes out afterwards, either...

Of course, because I'm old now, I'm so tired at work this morning that I could easily lay my head down on the desk and nap...why don't they have shows on weekend nights only? :)

5. I heard he was doing an acoustic tour
I prefer the more rockin' stuff, so I'm glad I caught this one.

4. He has one of the GREATEST quotes about rock critics...
"Let's face it, Robert Christgau makes his living by writing about his mail"
Brilliant!

Rock critics are a necessary evil.

8. The TLA is a cool place to see someone like Doughty.
I saw Mission of Burma there a few years back, I quite like that space.

Glad you enjoyed the show.

9. It has surprisingly good sound.
Last show I saw there was Liz Phair, and that was another solid show with not a lot of fireworks, but left me feeling like I'd been entertained well.

Do you live around here?

10. No - I traveled for that M.O.B. show.
I didn't realize their reunion was going to be ongoing, so I came to Philly from Cleveland to see them, thinking it was my last chance. D'oh! Did a lot of great record shopping on South St., though, so it was a very worthy trip. Philly's a great town.

11. It certainly is.
Next time you're in town, check out AKA records on 2nd street. It's the best record store in town: http://philadelphia.citysearch.com/profile/8957201

Also next time you're in town for a show, PM me. I'm usually up for some music. :)

12. I had no idea he went on without Soul Coughing.
They were one of my favorite bands from the long-ago 90s. But I gotta say, you missed the best show to cruise thru Philly recently one week ago tomorrow, when Stiff Little Fingers passed thru with The Tossers opening for them. I caught 'em in Towson and was tempted to drive the extra hour north, but came home instead.

13. Yeah I saw that show was going on
Couldn't make it but I would have liked to.

MD has two solo albums after Soul Coughing - they're both good. He puts on a nice show too.
