Some view new Superman as Christ figure
Both are heroes sent to earth by fathers to serve mankind

LOS ANGELES - First there were the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

Now, for many Christian moviegoers comes another gospel.

As the hype machine shifts into high gear for the upcoming release of “Superman Returns,” some are reading deeply into the film whose hero returns from a deathlike absence to play savior to the world.

“It is so on the nose that anyone who has not caught on that Superman is a Christ figure, you think, ‘Who else could it be referring to?”’ said Steve Skelton, who wrote a book examining parallels between Superman and Christ.

“Is this a new Superman for the new Evangelist red state America? Superman as Jesus?” asked one contributor to the Portland-based blog site Urban Honking.

3. Oh, give me a break.
This is absurd, imo. Superman is a comic book figure. End of story. Let's not attach pseudo-religious allegories here.

5. There are only a few stories that are retold different way.
The Christ-figure is one of the most common. Many stories contain what is arguably a Christ-figure, but that does not mean the story is about Jesus.

6. You are absolutely correct...
everyone from Charlotte in "Charlotte's Web" to Tom Robinson AND Boo Radley in "To Kill A Mockingbird" are Christ figures. It is one of the most used literary devices.

11. Bingo!

"Literary devices"

It's a literary device with several thousand years of pedigree, i.e. not a new idea in the 1st century.

19. SUPERMAN Jewish???

Jews and the invention of the American comic book

by jay schwartz
staff writer

Look up in the sky: It’s a bird. It’s a plane. No, it’s a minyan of comic book superheroes and their geeky Jewish creators.

From its inception, the modern comic book has been a friendly domain for Jews, from Marvel’s Stan Lee to Maus’ Art Spiegelman. Hawkman, the Flash, Thor, Superman and Batman were all created by overactive Jewish imaginations.

But like some dark secret held until the last cryptic panel, the Jewish connection to comics has only recently gotten any serious ink.

Why the Jews? How did the People of the Book become People of the Comic Book?

San Francisco-based writer Gerard Jones, author of “Men of Tomorrow: Geeks, Gangsters, and the Birth of the Comic Book,” says Jews did it by channeling “adolescent boys’ primal projections,” thus transforming a disreputable enterprise –– the lowly comic –– into a cornerstone of pop culture.

Most of the Jews who breathed life into the comics have origin stories worthy of a comic superhero: Depression-era teens dodging Yiddish hucksters and predatory gangsters, and displaying some superhuman chutzpah.

Says San Francisco’s Trina Robbins, a Jewish historian of women in the comics: “They either had to fight for themselves or be beaten up by the tough Irish kids. I don’t know if it’s in the genes, I don’t know if it’s the heritage, but there’s a thing about Jews and communication.”

Story continues...

Its a common theme in storytelling throughout history, both before and after Jesus. Even V for Vendetta had a certain Christ-story element to it.

26. The movie distribution companies are cutting back on previews, or
so I've heard. I'll have to call the publicist on Monday to see if some mistake has been made.

In any event, we'll go to the film after it opens because I've been waiting for it!

In peace,

Radio_Lady

PLEASE NOTE: The movie opening date has been pushed back to JUNE 28th -- but I still love this poster we saw in NYC!

So maybe it's just a glitch. I hope so!

The story of SPIDER-man is the greatest story ever told. I've always felt the Gospels would make a better read if Jesus started out kind of greedy but then turned to good after the brutal murder of his gentle Uncle Ben.
