None of the others come close, in my preferences.

6. I agree...
How can you not love a show that has the likes of Charles Nelson Reilly, Brett Somers and Richard Dawson?

Who just happened to be the host of the game show rigging scandal plagued "Twenty-One".

24. Quiz Show
Redford's movie about the scandal is terrific.

And if you haven't heard about Michael Larsen, the guy who sussed out the pattern and timing of the Press Your Luck board and won $110K-plus, check it out here:

5. Here he is, the one, the only...
Edited on Fri Jun-16-06 12:42 AM by longship
Audience: Groucho!

Simply the best quiz show ever.

"Say the secret woid and a duck will come down and give you fifty dollahs.

Word has it that on one show he asked a particularly nice looking female contestant to fish the fifty dollars she had just won out of his jacket pocket. As she plunged her hand into his pocket she exclaimed, "I feel silly."

Groucho raised his eyebrows and to the camera responded, "Reach down a little foither and you'll feel nuts."

Whether or not this story is true, Groucho was a comedic genius.

Hurray for Captain Spaulding!

29. I thought that was the Newlywed Game
I still remember my all-time favorite question from that show:

"Ladies, on your wedding night, what Indian name would your husband have given you?"

Bride #1: "Poker-hontas"

Alas, the young groom missed it by a mile.

11. Bowling for dollars.
It had Chick Hearn doing the commentary & interviews of normal working class contestants. He was always very nice to them, it was very old school. It was on channel 5 in LA in the early 70's.

16. Let's Make A Deal
Hosted by Winnipeg Canada native Monty Hall

As a kid I loved that show and the crazy costumes and booby prizes.

Monty's patter with the contestants was priceless.

Then there's the infamous Monty Hall probability problem

I always screamed, "Take the money!"

A thousand bucks could have bought 10,000 candy bars in those days :bounce:

17. Queen for a Day
Get three tremulous, beat-down housewives to tell their tales of woe and heartbreak. Stuff the biggest sad sack into an ermine cape, tiara, and sceptre, and watch her weep with gratitude as an endless cornucopia of dollar store gimcrackery and maybe a toaster oven is paraded before her.

It wasn't the best, but it was the weirdest game show of its time.

The poor woman would be queen for a day. Then, she'd go back to her wife-beating husband.

Jack Bailey crowns another poor soul.

23. The weirdest thing about it was probably the
applause-o-meter which determined the "winner," - the contestant who elicited the most audience response by virtue of being pathetic and downtrodden. Truly cringe-worthy.

with Bob Barker? My favorite bit was when he'd arrange for a soldier to be reunited on stage with his unsuspecting wife. I recall a couple of instances where the wife didn't look particularly happy to see the poor guy.

26. What's My Line.
Not so much for the actual "game," but for the show's personalities: Dorothy Kilgallon, Bennett Cerf, Arlene Francis, and the moderator John Daly - all extemely intelligent people. And who can forget the "Stopette" deoderant logo on the players' table.

31. Eye-Guess
Contestants would match up 8 pairs of prizes (everything from "a bent cent" to "a new car") to eventually reveal a rebus that they would then have to solve to win the prizes they had flipped over on the board. One day, a local guy from Pittsburg, Kansas (I was watching the show on Pittsburg station KOAM-TV) flipped over all 8 pairs of prizes, and solved the puzzle, on his first try.

as was the original Jeopardy! hosted by Art Fleming.

Hands-down winner.
The money wasn't huge, but everyone stayed seated, as did contestants on most game shows back then.

Concentration comes in second. :)

34. When I was sick and had to spend the day with my grandparents
they would watch Jeopardy!, the Hollywood Squares, and Sale of the Century. They loved Charlie Weaver, who was the bottom left on Hollywood Squares until he left the show. Paul Lynde (Uncle Arthur from Bewitched) , who was usually the center square, was always good for a laugh.
