Post Bible Verses that You Know By Heart.
Edited on Fri Jun-16-06 08:56 AM by bertha katzenengel
In another thread, someone asked me how i could have the knowledge i needed to be "saved" at age six. In answering that question, i quoted two Bible verses as if I'd been reading the book and going to church all this time (20 years since i renounced that faith).

Probably we all know John 3:16: "for God so loved the world" etc.

Don't worry about the reference. Just quote the verse. Or verses. Only if they're memorized.

Here are the two i posted earlier:

"all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God" and "unless a man be born again he cannot see the kingdom of Heaven"

Yours?

edit: they don't have to mean anything to you now - just curious about what has stuck with us over the years

73. Man, I got in trouble with that one in Vacation Bible School
We had to learn a different verse every day. One day I didn't want to,
so that's what I spouted. My teacher tried to make an example of me
and I told her I thought it represented Jesus' humanity. I got kicked
out. Oh well. I've been kicked out of better churches.

6. mine;
John 3:16 for God so loved etc ...

John 11:35 Jesus wept

1 Corinthians 13:4-7 Love is patient, love is kind, it is not envious. Love does not brag, it is not puffed up.

It is not rude, it is not self-serving, it is not easily angered or resentful.
It is not glad about injustice, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

finally...
1Corinthians 13:13 And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.

15. James 2:14-26
Edited on Fri Jun-16-06 11:06 AM by MrsGrumpy
What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?
If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,
And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?
Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.
Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?
For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

***It's written in the front page of my planner...I have always loved it.

17. (Psalm 46:10) Be still, and know that I am .......
Also:
(Isaiah 30:15) In quietness and confidence shall be your strength.

I am a firm believer in an inner relationship with the Universe (God), and not one that is flaunted around before others. I think that is why I enjoy these verses so much. (The "Be still..." verse is hanging on my wall.)

"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will inherit the kingdom of heaven..... for on that day, I will say to them 'I never knew you. Go away from me, you evil-doers." (Matthew 7:21, 23)

And,
"God did not send the Son into the world to condemn it, but that the world might be saved through *him." (John 3:17)

* I read the "him" as meaning God, not necessarily the Son.

One Sunday during the homily he started the congregation reciting "The Lord's Prayer". When we finished he said "Wow look at that - a whole roomful of Catholics reciting scripture from memory! My Baptist minister friends will never believe it."

Pretty funny moment for a Catholic Mass.

For they shall be called the children of God." (Matthew, something)

The 23rd Psalm: "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want..."

Not sure of the exact wording of this, but something along the lines of "that which you do to the least of men, you do unto me."

"Judge not, lest ye be judged."

"Let he who is without sin cast the first stone."

Edit: spelling

Funny, for something three, youd think there weren't any laws...lol

"For God so loved the world" of course

"All have sinned and have come short the glory of God" - Romans something. Also something in the Bible I 100% disagree with.

"Ask and you shall receive, knock and the door shall be opened for you"

and there's a fourth one somewhere...

I tend to know those verses which appear in the Liturgy - this means vast numbers of bits from the Psalms, plus the Canticles; also lots of parts which I don't necessarily realise are from the Bible, because half of the Mass is directly taken from it.

Oh, and the entire libretto of Messiah.

From (I think) first Corinthians, though I might have the reference wrong.

Upon this rock I will build my church.
Love covers a multitude of sins.
My God, My God, why have you abandoned me?

There are others, I think, but those pop most quickly to mind.

50. 1st Corinthians 13
1 If I speak with the languages of men and of angels, but don't have love, I have become sounding brass, or a clanging cymbal.
2 If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but don't have love, I am nothing.
3 If I dole out all my goods to feed the poor, and if I give my body to be burned, but don't have love, it profits me nothing.
4 Love is patient and is kind; love doesn't envy. Love doesn't brag, is not proud,
5 doesn't behave itself inappropriately, doesn't seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil;
6 doesn't rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth;
7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will be done away with. Where there are various languages, they will cease. Where there is knowledge, it will be done away with.
9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part;
10 but when that which is complete has come, then that which is partial will be done away with.
11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I felt as a child, I thought as a child. Now that I have become a man, I have put away childish things.
12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I will know fully, even as I was also fully known.
13 But now faith, hope, and love remain—these three. The greatest of these is love.

52. The Song of Songs
My beloved is like a roe or a young hart: behold, he standeth behind our wall, he looketh forth at the windows, shewing himself through the lattice. My beloved spake, and said unto me, Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away. For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone; The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land; The fig tree putteth forth her green figs, and the vines with the tender grape give a good smell. Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away.

O my dove, that art in the clefts of the rock, in the secret places of the stairs, let me see thy countenance, let me hear thy voice; for sweet is thy voice, and thy countenance is comely. Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines: for our vines have tender grapes.

My beloved is mine, and I am his: he feedeth among the lilies. Until the day break, and the shadows flee away, turn, my beloved, and be thou like a roe or a young hart upon the mountains of Bether.

70. I confess...
I'm Jewish- I learned it by watching Pulp Fiction. But let me say- there are some amazing lines in the bible, if you know where to look.

61. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed
by the renewal of your mind, so you may discern the will of God, what is good, and acceptable, and perfect.

(That's one of my favorite passages.)

62. I don't know what this one is
Other than that Orwell quoted it in "Politics and the English Language" and it stuck with me:

I returned and saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift, nor victory to the bold, nor bread to the just man, but time and chance happeneth to them all.

63. More from Matthew
For I was an hungered, and you gave me meat. I was thirsty, and you gave me drink. I was a stranger, and you took me in. Naked, and you clothed me. I was sick, and you visited me. I was in prison, and you came to me.

Then the righteous answered him, saying "Lord, when were you hungry did we feed you, or were you thirsty and we offered you drink? When were you a stranger, did we take you in? or naked, and clothed you? Or when did we see you sick, or in prison, and came to you?

And the King answered them to say, Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever you have done it unto the least of these, my brethren, you have unto me.

64. Whoso keepeth his tongue and his mouth, keepeth his soul from troubles.
Edited on Fri Jun-16-06 08:43 PM by 1monster
Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth, for thy love is better than wine.

Make a joyful noise unto the lord.

Judge not lest ye also should be judged.

Suffer the little children to come unto me.

It shall be easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven.

72. A few
In my anguish I cried to the Lord, and he answered by setting me free.

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

God is love.

Judge not, that you be not judged.

But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen.

Jesus wept.

Beware the yeast of the Pharisees.

He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.

78. Not sure where in the Bible it is
But goes something like "and you shall know them by their deeds", referring to the false prophets who would present themselves as true Christians. A lot of that going around the world Right Now, especially the so called "Christians" on the Right who spread hate and division among the people here in America, and also in the rest of the world
