DU ladies - flip-flops to work in a business suit?
Is that a "yay" or "nay"?

I was in Manhattan yesterday in an office that was not business casual - everybody was professionally dressed, with both men & women in suits. When I got there, a very pretty young Chinese woman greeted me, and she had on a nice grey jacket with matching skirt, and a white silk blouse underneath. Then, when she turned around to get her boss, I realized that she had on what amounted to a black pair of flip-flops. The soles may have been a bit thicker, but it just struck me as odd that here she was in a nice suit, and had on flip-flops.

Is this the "professional" style for women nowadays?

2. Well... they do make flip-flops that are borderline

suitable for business dress. Personally, it doesn't seem right that they make flip-flops into anything other than this:

3. No, no, NO!!!!
Not unless it's to walk back and forth to work. (Some women wear tennis shoes or flat shoes from the subway to the office, etc., which makes good sense.) However, at the workplace, it's extremely tacky. :eyes:

4. My wife has a $40 pair of flip-flops with rubber heels
They go with some of her summer dress outfits...I guess. I don't even worry if the color of my belt matches my shoes.

5. I can't get "dorm shower" out of my head with flip-flops.
I don't wear anything other than regular shoes with suits, but I'll wear sandals with summer dresses.

6. Sandals are fine....just not flip-flops!
Sandals are perfectly fine. Leave the flip-flops for shorts, the beach, etc. :) I saw a girl a few weeks ago in a prom dress, all dolled up, and then....she was wearing thick-soled flip-flops. :eyes: What's up with that???

Kinda reminds me of a wedding I went to where the bride was wearing a beautiful, expensive dress, and underneath, she was wearing ratty, dirty tennis shoes... :puke: Hubby's a good friend of the groom, and the story was that she threw a tantrum just before the wedding because she wanted to be "comfortable" under the dress and threw her $200 shoes at her mother. Everyone could see the tennis shoes as she walked down the aisle. They showed up in her pics, too. :( What's the point of spending a fortune on the wedding if that's gonna happen?

9. At least wear clean tennis shoes if you want to go that route.
Or get married on the beach or in your backyard and go barefoot.

12. I am wearing rubber £3 flip flops today at work.
I work in a very conservative public service job.
Last week when I got my heels out of my bag to change shoes for a meeting my boss asked me why I was bothering.
I must say though, I am kind of the 'one of these kids just doesn't belong here' at my job.

As in one of the 10 biggest in the US, and probably one of the 20-25 biggest in the world...Right on Wall Street in NYC.

13. Under normal circumstances, No
but a co-worker of mine recently wore flip flops because she had a really bad cut on her foot and any other sandals she had rubbed the bandage, thus causing pain. Maybe she hurt her foot?

14. it is possible
and, as a guy, I wouldn't complain about it, as I would think it not my business unless she was distracting her co-workers.

17. it's gotten a lot more common in nyc partly because the fancier ones
have become really popular. slides and thong sandals with heels or in leathers have been big for years.
people do not feel weird about wearing sandals with suits anymore in all but the most conservative places.
but white tennis sneakers? now that would look dorky and be distracting.

They have another sense of footware and like open foot ware and cloth shoes.

20. I don't remember seeing it in China
But, it's been a while since I was there. My wife was just there in April on business, however.

the business centers in China (Hong Kong/Shenzhen/Guangzhou & Shanghai) are also generally warmer than the US (NYC, Chicago, LA)...

21. Were they dressy flip-flops
Example:

or were they regular flip-flops...

The first example is technically a flip-flop and can be worn with a suit. The second...absolutely NOT.

22. between the two of those
If she had the first pair on, I probably would have been drooling...

But, they were all black, and had a bit thicker of a heel than the 2nd one.

23. Then no.
Honestly, in a conservative power office, even the first pair is a stretch. Anything less dressy than those would be a total no-no.

26. I have been seeing flip-flops on the workers of DC since March.
Yes, people were wearing winter coats and flip-flops. I don't get this at all. Do their chests get cold but not their toes?

It's only recently that I saw a young woman wearing a business suit with a pair of flip-flops.

I hate this trend (and don't tell me it's all about comfort, because you can scrape up your feet pretty badly on the streets, or trip disastrously). Unless you have a foot problem or work as a lifeguard or similar, I don't think flip-flops belong at work.

I'm out and about casually. I can't wear them to work because it's against company policy.

33. While I'm inclined to agree...
Does she get away with wearing flip-flops because she is an attractive young woman, or because it's ok in general? (meaning, if it was a man wearing flip-flops, or an unattractive woman, would somebody pull them into an office & say that their attire was not appropriate?)

35. Oh. Okay, I *think*
she gets away with it because she is a comely young lass, and yes I think less "attractive" people can not get away with "sloppy dress". But in my opinion almost any style of dress is acceptable. However, I would not be surprised if other people treat a poorly dressed person badly or that person gets fired or disciplined.

Interesting. Nice promotion of ugly gender stereotypes of all kinds there. Then again, that seems to be the theme for this thread.

37. What are you taking about?
That was a turn of phrase. I was specifically asked a question and I responded. It has nothing to do with defining a woman by her looks. First off because I have not seen the woman in question and second because I'm not saying *I* like pretty women and let them get away with "sloppy dress" but that IMO society does...

So, please tell me what "Nice promotion of ugly gender stereotypes of all kinds there" I have done?

Edited on Fri Jun-16-06 03:39 PM by Radio_Lady
Those are the only places I would wear flip-flops (are they called "zories" or something like that in Japanese?).

I would wear white or light colored sandals with a nice pedicure and nail polish -- since casual summer dress is OK in Portland, Oregon. But not flip-flops.

Guess what? People wore flip-flops on the 5 1/2 hour plane ride from Newark, NJ to Portland, OR. That really surprised me.
