Unbelievable movie. If you like stuff like Memento or Fight Club, you'll love this one.

Any other loungers seen this foreign gem?

Own it on DVD too. There's supposedly a tepid American remake in the works, but I hope they leave it alone.

Chan Wook-Park (the director) is definitely one of the top hot international directors right now. Check out some of his other movies: Joint Security Area, and The Sympathy for Vengeance trilogy. Good stuff.

Edit: Oh yeah--technically, it's Oldboy (one word)

2. It really doesn't need a remake.
Even the dubbing isn't bad at all. Just leave it alone!

I'll be sure to check out those suggestions! Thanks!

4. Hell no.
I've watched hundreds of foreign films/TV shows. I've come to one conclusion - the dubbed vs. subbed debate should be buried once and for all.

Studios are putting out quality dubs these days. No longer is the voice acting so bad that it kills the movie. Therefore, what do you get with subbed films? A visual distraction and a language you can't understand. Hell, due to differences in voice inflections among languages, you can't even legitimately make out emotions to put along with the words. You're far better off with a good dubbing than subtitles.

Embrace dubbing! It's far more enjoyable.

5. Sorry, gotta disagree
I agree that dubbing has generally improved, but it still sucks. Particularly in Asian films, where mood is so key, hearing some white guy doing a voice just totally takes me out of the moment. The only exception I'd make are for the Miyazaki cartoons--cause they do Japanese and English tracks up front. In general though, I want to see my movies exactly how they were intended--in their original aspect ratio and with subtitles if necessary.

Still a great movie, though! That scene where he eats the live octopus is really amazing. They had to shoot it twice!

6. I have read the reviews and it is supposed to be great film.
But I have not seen it, because I hate watching foreign movies because of the subtitles.

7. The octopus scene is seared in my memory...
Edited on Fri Jun-16-06 02:43 PM by Julius Civitatus
...wait a minute....
I shouldn't have brought it back... wait...

:puke:

I feel better now.

Still, it's an AMAZING movie, really engaging and well told.
But I'm not sure I'll look the same wait at some of the pieces of sushi in my plate.

Wait... not again....

:puke:

9. For me, it's the "hammer dentistry" that is seared.
Can I get a "HOLY SHIT THAT MUST HURT!"?

11. I thought Hostel was only "meh"
Euro Chainsaw Massacre, so far as I'm concerned. I thought House of 1,000 Corpses was far better for TMC rip-offs. At least it had a different psychology involved.

13. You will NOT be disappointed.
And if you're anything like me, you probably will rewind the hallway scene a few times. Just amazing.
