8. I considered training my cat back when it was just Abbott
but the thing said for cats 15lbs or less and Abbott was just at 15lbs. Didn't want to end up with a toilet soaked 15lb cat roaming my home

9. that City Kitty thing wouldn't work for Caindy either (my sig kitty)
she's too hefty. they didn't like it when i used a roasting pan either (the crumply noise freaks them out).
i have been using a modified sitz bath. hopefully this is the end of it and i'm done by july. we're almost there, not much cleanup at all these days.
my new rules: no litter boxes, no ashtrays. i'm done with all of that.

11. Harley's been using his elevated litterbox for two weeks now.

I have it right next to the toilet about 3 inches lower than the toilet seat. What's the next step? :D

12. is your litter flushable?
you should switch over now. nothing clumpable. feline pine, sweatscoop ans world's best litter are all great. i hear al lot of clays work too, but they scare me.

okay, now you have to take a good look at the seat you have- is it very slippery? is the part you sit on very flat and fairly wide? , or is it narrow and or sloped at a bit of an angle- kinda contoured for a human ass? if it'd oval and not round or your cat's not too agile these things matter more. if it's really slippery you may have to temporarily install another model (they love wood- it's the texture) or put some of those shower no skid strips on what you have.

you got all that down? do you have treats he loves too? okay, now we need two sitz baths, a sodering iron, a hot glue gun and some soft plastic (milk jugs are great). that's the total investment up front, and you make it back in a month. :).
i'm going to take some pics to show for the next step.

13. Yes, we got flushable litter earlier this week.
Edited on Sat Jun-17-06 12:27 PM by Misunderestimator
The lid is a bit sloped, but not slippery. However, I think getting a wood one makes a lot of sense, so I will do that. I'll get the sitz baths, soldering iron and glue gun while I'm at it. Treats... check, got those.

Looking forward to your next tip :)

15. and harley's okay with the litter? you want just one change at a time...
easier to figure out why the cat is resisting if you have only one new thing going on. then you can go back a step and figure out a work around.

16. Yep, he had no problem transitioning to the new litter...
have been using it for about five days now. That alone is great, just being able to scoop it out and throw it in the toilet and flush. A lot easier and cleaner.

17. wait till it's starts going straight into the toilet.
it's a great thing!
one thing that helps in training is to make a "good girl" noise or phrase for ONLY DURING specifically desired behavior + that's it. always treat after. but it helps if you can signal them while they're doing it, some cats don;t make the connection between toilet and treat with out this. some do, but i find the noise encourages them when they are balky, first days of a new modification.

okay, harleys regular, no constipation or straining to poo? are you feeding 2X a day, can you discern any schedule? you want to try and be around at the beginning of each new stage. very often they go 20 min or so after a feeding.

18. Well, he has no problems going... and seems to have a healthy
system... but he only eats dry food. We've been trying to find a canned food he likes and haven't had much luck (go figure). He eats his dry food pretty much whenever he feels like it and I haven't been able to discern any kind of schedule to his litter-going habits.

I'll pick up a few new kinds of canned food and see what happens. Should I at any point put the litter box on top of the toilet seat? Or is the next step to use a sitz bath with litter in it?

19. i had it right next to it, and then kept the stuff propping the box up
Edited on Sat Jun-17-06 01:09 PM by bettyellen
(changing as little as possible) but disappeared the box itself. and voila, the sitz was there with the litter. no problem.
then i slowly got rid of her prop up and now they jump up.

you may have to burn off this ridge on the back of the sitz to get the seat to close well. (knives can shatter the plastic) i also had to slightly loosen my toilet seat bolts. the sitz is a little bulky. the first step will be to get it under that seat, and fill with litter! when you soder off the ridge, do it outside or out a window, don;t breathe it in.

hey, as long as that cat is not straining with hard poo, you're fine. people use canned pumpkin (not pie filling) or something called petromalt if there's a problem. occasionally your more skittish cats will respond to change by holding it in. my little pea moans and stalls with change, (cooing to her helps) but i haven't had to dose her with anything.

21. Cool... I will raise it just a few more inches, while I get my supplies...
and then see what happens! Our boy is excited about this too... it will be so cool when his favorite cat-brother goes to the toilet the same way he does. :D
