44. pancetta. the prosciutto was for the potato's (Recipe HERE)
2 teaspoons olive oil
4 ounces pancetta, cut into 1/4-inch pieces
2/3 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup sour cream
1 large garlic cloves or 2 small, minced
6 ounces crumbled Gorgonzola
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 head iceberg lettuce, cut into 6 wedges

Heat the oil in a heavy medium skillet over medium heat. Add the pancetta and saute until crisp and golden, about 5 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the pancetta to a paper towel-lined plate to drain the excess oil.

Stir the buttermilk, sour cream, and garlic in a medium bowl to blend; mix 2/3 of the cheese. Season the dressing with salt and pepper, to taste.

(The dressing can be made up to 2 days ahead. Cover and refrigerate. Stir to blend before using, adding more milk to thin the sauce, if necessary.)

Arrange each of 6 lettuce wedges on 6 plates. Spoon the dressing over the lettuce. Sprinkle with the pancetta and remaining cheese and serve.

85. Oh, I'm definitely a foodie.
But I'm really not that much of a snob. If a person wants to eat at Olive Garden in New York or MickeyD's in London and Paris, I'm not going to talk them out of it, or even mock them for it.

Sure, if it was me going to New York, I sample my way through some of the finest restaurants my wallet could handle. But not everyone looking for dinner in New York is looking for a culinary experience; just like not everyone looking for a job in Hollywood is hoping to be a film star, and not everyone in a Berkeley coffee shop is a Birkenstock-wearing vegan, and not everyone in Green Bay, WI moved there to get on MrsGrumpy's Christmas card list. Okay, probably that last one really is true, but the rest of 'em, notsomuch. :hi:

but some could show a little more understanding for people who come to NYC and just fall into a semi familiar place to eat. It wouldn't be my choice (nor my general strategy) but for many the City is very overwhelming and even a meal at the Olive Garden can be exciting.

and thinking that going to the Olive Garden while in New York City is a bad choice. I enjoy junk food as much as the next person, but if I'm going to visit one of the best food towns in the world I sure as hell am not going to be eating the pasta at Olive Garden.

Some people are more inclined to stay with what they're comfortable with... be less adventurous.

Why jump all over people for even the slightest little difference?

*sigh*

"Price," "Olive Garden," and "reasonable" don't belong...
in the same thread. $40 for some frozen chicken and canned pasta warmed up in an oven isn't reasonable.

The whole point of traveling is to be adventurous. If you don't want to be adventurous, stay home.

73. Proud food snob here.
I won't impugn people for their food choices. I might impugn the choices themselves. That's how Internet discussion has worked since the dawn of time -- one person posts their preferences, another person posts variations on "ick."

I wouldn't choose a chain restaurant over a similarly priced local establishment in a city full of local establishments, but if that's what you want to do with your time and money, that's your business. (OK, I admit I'm still a little annoyed that my company held its trade-show dinner at Maggiano's, in Chicago, when we have a Maggiano's in Milwaukee and there are 10000 better restaurants in Chicago.)

74. Question...
Shall people who have dined at chains go ahead and turn in their Dem cards?

78. How could you possibly have gotten that from what I posted?
I call myself a food snob perhaps a bit self-depricatingly, for what it's worth.

Anyhow: I said very plainly that while I wouldn't eat at a chain restaurant over a similarly priced local establishment, if someone wants to do so with their time and money, it's their business.

Similarly:

I don't jump out of airplanes, but if someone wants to with their time and money, it's their business.
I don't wear flip-flops, but if someone wants to with their money (not much time there), it's their business.
I don't have much of a desire to learn to ballroom dance, but if someone wants to with their time and money, it's their business.

How does one's Dem credentials fit into this argument at all, either in the original thread or this one?

That chip on your shoulder's affecting your posture.

It was a bunch of elitist CRAP.

84. So having an opinion is elitist?
Take a look at every music thread on DU. People disagree vociferously. "Eeew, you like A Simple Plan? Are you on drugs?" "Olive Garden? Are you crazy?" has similar weight to that, I think. It's the nature of Internet discussion.

Nobody suggests confiscating one's party membership as a result.

For the record, I've eaten at Olive Garden once in the last two years. It was too expensive for what it was. The food was too salty for my tastes, and the restroom was in unacceptable condition. (I notified the hostess about that last one.) I wouldn't go back. Does that make me an elitist? I don't think so, because if I ate at a snooty French restaurant that was overpriced, too salty and not properly maintained, I wouldn't go back either.

I'd wager most people who chimed in on that thread have been to an Olive Garden at some point, and didn't like it much either.

In fact, I couldn't care less where someone wants to eat when they're on vacation. Convenience dining does not equal renunciation of the Democratic Party. I think all this bickering is silly.

Edited on Mon Jun-19-06 07:36 PM by Beware the Beast Man
but starting a whole new thread to grill said "snobs" wouldn't have been my first choice, either.

But something tells me that there's more to all this than what's on the surface. Call it a hunch...

95. THIS IS THE DEFINITIVE WORD
Anyone who eats at the Olive Garden in New York City is a fucking moron. Period. There is no excuse for it, and no apology for the judgment. You have to be a lazy, ignorant, dim-witted fool to do it. Yeah, I fucking said it. What?
