Poll question: Still trying to name our Daughter
My esteemed friends,

About six weeks ago, I posted a poll asking your opinion as to what to name our new Daughter due in August. The winner of that poll was the lovely name Olivia, which was rejected by my Wife, as was Grace. These were the top two vote getters.

Here's the original thread
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=105&topic_id=5098717

So, we've been knocking around more names, and I want your input......

3. When we named our son
nearly 30 years ago, we went through the 1000 names for baby book and picked something we could agree on. It was Sean. Did the same for #2 son.

Family names are good, if the names are cool. (Maybe you really don't want to turn Grandpa Frederick into Fredericka.)

You've got a couple of months. You'll pick something. It will be fine. She will become that name or that name will become her. It will be fine. And you will love her like you cannot imagine. :loveya:

59. And, of course, she can change her first name by usage, or in
probate court, I believe. As long as she is not trying to defraud anyone.

You look at a tiny infant and give it a name.

I happened upon Linda Michelle for my girl, and David Scott for my boy. I would have given them my maiden name as a middle name, but it wasn't in vogue then.

They both grew into their names, and Mz Pip, you're right. We love them like you can't imagine...

7. I voted for Saralyn Sage for much the same reason.
It sounds beautiful when you say it out loud. And there won't be six other little girls on her soccer team with the same name. When she's an adult, her first name alone will identify her at work. And, I must repeat, it sounds beautiful.

However, I learned that the name can be said as "A-va" with a long "a". It's a French pronunciation.

That might make me hesitiate a little.

Emily Rose

12. Not to offend
And I'm really sorry if it's your name, but I HATE the name Lynn. It's so clicheed and middle America, and it seems that every redneck has "Lynn" somewhere in their name, male or female. Olivia and Grace are much better, but in this poll, I had to go with Sophia Sage. I like Sophia, and Sage is unusual but not kooky.

Again, don't mean to offend. Just my personal, personal, worth-nothing opinion. But you did ask.

And CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

17. Maybe Lynn is a family name or something...
I don't much care for the name "Lynn" either, but since it's in every choice, there must be a reason.

My kids' English names are Isaac and Joseph. I'm glad I didn't have to name a girl because the popular names now - Brooklyn, Dakota, Ashley, etc. are too cutesy for my taste. Kids' names in general these days seem so pretentious and yuppie-ish or soap opera-ish. Taylor, Tyler, Dylan and Declan? :puke: Even the boring 70s names like Matt, Scott, Todd and Ben , and Jennifer, Stephanie and Kelly were better.

Maybe it's time to go really old school on the names and bring back Agnes, Clara & Sandra, Charles, Richard & James...

24. Please don't use April or Saralyn.
They sound like "stripper names." While I personally have no problem with women who choose to support themselves via exotic dancing--sadly, the rest of this sick, misogynist society has started forming a few disgusting judgments about women with "those kinds of names." Whenever I meet someone who has been named their kid something like that, I wonder if Dad has been spending a little bit too much time with his adult videos.

Quia fecit mihi magna qui potens est, et sanctum nomen eius.
Et misericordia eius a progenie in progenies timentibus eum.
Fecit potentiam in bracchio suo, dispersit superbos mente cordis sui.
Deposuit potentes de sede et exaltavit humiles.

and that's what it means; Merciful.

Funny story, she was the youngest daughter. By Hispanic tradition, she was supposed to remain a spinster to take care of her parents in their old age. Ever see Water for Chocolate? that tradition was for real. Luckily, she rebelled and was the first to marry.

:bounce:

Of course, there is also Aimée, which means beloved. I like that name as well.

45. Fairly good choices; a piece of advice....
...given to me before the birth of one of my 3 kids:

Two naming constraints:
1. choose a name whose NICKNAME can be screamed out the back door of your house without causing your child to die of shame.
2. chose a FORMAL name that will sound reasonable when preceded by "Doctor" or "The Honorable." "Doogie Howser, MD" was a very bad joke, and rightly so.

SARA is good, but SARALYN sounds a little to0 "Southern" (if you get my drift) or like a mispronunciation of "SARIN."

My two cents as the father of STUART, SIDNEY, and GWENDELYNN.

I always felt a little bit sorry for my cousin, Siobhan, when she was young, having to explain over and over and over and over again that "it's prounounced SHA-VON" when people just tortured her name.

Of course, it's all fine after we grow up, but some kids never truly recover from early traumas.

When I was a little girl one of my good friend's was Sarah Lynn. I have good memories of her, but Lynn seems like a very dated middle name to me.

I know a man named Lynn and he's a great guy, but I'm not crazy about the name. Since it's a family name, I think that's nice to pass it on to your daughter. I'm from the era when it seemed like a good 80 percent of the girls middle names were Lynn, Lee, Marie, or Elizabeth.

108. Funny you should say that....
Leslie has a long history in my inlaws' family, and Beverly has a long history in the family of my sister's inlaws.

But the worst of the worst, I think, is my brother in law (of the Leslie line) whose given names are Brooke Leslie.

Yep, complete with the "e" on Brooke.

Poor guy, no wonder he's so screwed up.

71. I'm not French
but my husband's family emigrated from France to Canada, then U.S. (his aunts & uncles grew up speaking French at home). Since our last name is very French, we elected for a name that would look "right" with our last name.

the pronunciation is something like "zhan vee EV" (it's similar to the J sound in the French pronunciation of Jean)

It caused a little confusion in my family - the first year of her life, my dad would call her JonBenet!

Along those lines, I'm glad your wife rejected Olivia and Grace. She would probably have been Olivia X. or Grace X. (or whatever your last initial is) to differentiate her from Olivia Y. or Grace Z. in her class ...

Choosing a timeless, classic name is the best gift parents can ever give their child..

Lots of people don't imagine that name on an office door, a business card, a desk name plate or on a uniform..

Cutesy/trendy names are best used as NICKNAMES...

No child enjoys being Madison#7 or Joshua#4 in kindergarten:)

and someday that child will be a grandparent.. Grandma Tiffani just sounds odd:)

109. I had 4 Sarahs in my elementary school class.
Three of them even had the same last initial *and* middle name. I'd say no to Thalia for the same reasons listed above and my first association is "thrall" and bondage.

I've always liked the name "Aletheia". It's Greek for "honesty" and has good nickname possibilities if she ends up a tomboy (Allie), a bookworm (Thea) or an artist (the full name). And it's not too common, but not totally out the of the woods and it looks like it sounds.

I also like Agatha, Audrey, Constance (with the nickname "Stanzi") and Daria.

However, if your wife has ruled out Olivia and Grace (in my opinion, two of the most beatiful female names in the English language), she's hardly likely to accept my third choice.

Let her name the kid whatever she wants. Obviously, she has strong opinions that she isn't interested in having challenged by you or anyone else. I really wish you luck.

123. If your name is April you must have a birthday in April
If your name is Holly you must be born in December or January.
That's the rules.
June may not matter so much. I prefer Mae over May.

I voted for Natalie. It's a power name and uncommon. Sara is not real exiting.

I also like Claudia (pronouced either english or Spanish), Julia (pronounced english), and Helene (pronounced Helleen not the french hell-n), and Helena (pronounced either hel-n-ah, or hel-ee-nah)also Caroline, Lydia, Nina, and Suzanne.

If I were Spanish I might go with Marielena or French Mirielle or Sofie, or Mariela if I was one or the other.

But the rules are these: You don't want to pick a name where people say "Get Over Yourself" and you don't want to pick a name where a potential date says "I can't date someone who has my mother's name or who has the same name as the last person I dated."

125. I'm very partial to the name Genevieve, myself.
I've written some stories with a character named Genevieve, and I'm convinced it's because that should have been my name--I was a "Jennifer" when so many girls were being named Jennifer, but Genevieve is just a twist different, and it sounds pretty. And you still have the option of baby nicknames like "Gen" and "Genny." But what may very well happen is, you'll see your newborn sweetheart and say, why she looks like a (Cassandra, Melinda, Angelina, Bridget, Emily) and there you'll have it.
