Does Coca-Cola In Glass Bottles REALLY Taste Better Than...
... Coca-Cola in plastic bottles does?

Or is it just my imagination? Is it just the nostalgic feel of the cold glass, and extra weight of the glass bottle that influences me? Do they use a different recipe? Less carbonation? Sugar instead of corn-syrup?

1. I think they use corn syrup in the glass bottles too...
Although if you get Kosher Coke or Mexican Coke, it's made with sugar. I don't think I've ever had REAL Coke made with sugar...unfortunately I grew up in the high fructose corn syrup era. I would love to taste the real stuff one day, I bet it's killer. However I do think it tastes better in the bottle too, I don't know why, it just does.

2. Mmmm...raiding the teachers lounge
NOTHING has ever tasted better than glass-bottle cokes bought for $.25 from the machine in the teachers lounge after track practice (we were not allowed in the teachers lounge, but couldnt resist the appeal of cold Cokes). We used to keep our quarters in our shoes during practice.

And yes, I AM dating myself.

3. Coca-Cola is nasty anyway...
But I've found that drinks in glass bottles are way better. Not sure why though.

6. I don't know if they really do anything different or not....
but I definitely prefer Coke in glass bottles over plastic bottles; cans are preferable to plastic, but not as good as glass.

What I really, really like is a fountain Coke from McDonald's!

9. In the worst job department
I worked at a Coke plant for a few weeks and one of my jobs was cleaning the "pre-mix" tanks, where they formulated the stuff that is used to make fountain soda. The smell was so cloying and nasty that I couldn't drink Coke for years.

I do think either draft Coke or glass bottle Coke taste better than the stuff in plastic bottles.

8. Depends on how old the glass bottles are
Coke started using high fructose corn syrup in 1980, so if it's before that, it may have a different flavor.

10. I think so.

I even prefer to drink it from a glass instead of a plastic cup, if I'm not drinking it right out of the bottle. The best tasting Coke comes from a good soda fountain, in a styrofoam cup with crushed ice, the way Sonic makes them. If only they used bendy straws.

12. As with V8, most definitely yes.
Edited on Thu Jun-22-06 11:40 AM by HypnoToad
Plastic leeches something into the liquid and alters its taste. Indeed, of all the liquids I don't mind having in my mouth, anything contained in plastic is not one of them. V8 in a plastic bottle - blehk!!

Heck, I won't even get an acrylic aquarium.

13. Glass does make a difference. But the corn syrup is a big factor, too.
Occassionally I will get a coke that tastes like I remember it tasting back in the 1960s and I realize that, yes, there is a difference. Notice the difference between drinking a Coke out of a can and having one at a soda fountain.

15. I'm not sure, but
IMO there is a difference...example...

1. Mt dew in a can, to me, tastes the best, the second best is in a plastic bottle, and worse is on tap/soda machine...

2. Beer, especially George Killians Irish red, to me it tastes best on tap, than in bottles, and it tastes worst in cans...

16. YES!
awalden, you are a person of discerning tastes. I know of ONE restaurant here where I can buy Coke in glass bottles, and whenever I have to wait there for my bus, I buy a _bunch_ of it. This Coke in glass bottles has to be imported from Italy or Mexico, because it tastes really, really great, not cloying or syrupy. I think it must have real sugar in it. It's a huge treat for Call Me Wesley's family when I return home with a briefcase full of Coke in glass bottles.

18. Anything in glass tastes better than anything in metal.
Goes for beeer or just about anything.

Can you believe they're going to start selling beer in plastic bottles? :puke:

And of course plastic is less recyclable than glass...

23. Yes...
because the acid in Coca-Cola reacts with plastic (or aluminum, for that matter) and affects the flavour.

Glass, on the other hand, is almost totally inert and non-reactive with acid.
