What is your favorite cult film?

You know, I actually haven't seen Clockwork Orange, yet. I think it is time.

Love the music in 2001, and the visuals. So many movies after would have been in limbo were it not for 2001, most espicially, Star Wars.

34. Here's the breakdown
"Mad Max" and "The Road Warrior" = Two of the greatest fucking movies ever made.

"Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome" = One of the stupidest fucking movies ever made.

On a side note: Does Mad Max look like a lost member of the Village People or is it just me?

there are a couple of the sat stations up here who occasionally have festival weekends of great movies and their sequels. They often show Mad Max and Road Warrior, but they never show Beyond Thunderdome. It just goes to show how universally reviled it is.

36. Another vote for Dazed and Confused
I love all the films listed, especially RHPS and Spinal Tap, but D&C takes me back to the last day of school 1976 when I was Junior about to become a Senior. It's a step into the wayback machine for me.

We even had our own version of Wooderson and yes, he even drove a Chevelle SS!

The character I most closely identify with is Tony. He even looks like I did back then. For characters such as Tony and me, college was a much more enjoyable experience than high school.

The film just got the Criterion treatment early this month so you can now buy a two disk boxed set with lots of extras: screen tests, deleted scenes and an audio commentary by the director.

51. AIR RAID!!!
Seriously, I was the exact same age as the soon to be seniors in that film and also in a kinda rural school where cars ruled. Our hazing was just the first week of school. I was made to wear a dress, others had to wear their underwear on the outside. But after that first week, you were pretty much in. Of course, by the time I was a senior, it had pretty much been done away with.

I remember the clothes, the cars, the CB radios and the PA systems, and keggers in the woods. Though we didn't have moon towers for illumination.

The only thing we didn't have was the fire escape slide from the junior high school. We would have been left to fry.

Like bacon.

I had no idea this movie existed until someone brought it to my house for a New Year's Eve party several years ago. I ended up watching it three times in a 24 hour period. I'm not real sure why it affected me so, but it did. I can almost quote the entire movie.

Most cult films get no attention at all when they're released and then develop a huge following years later.

71. Does Rocky Horror still qualify as a cult movie these days?
Nothing against the movie or its fans, but can a movie be considered a cult movie if it runs every Halloween, if it plays every Friday or Saturday at Midnight, (which it did here for a while, but I don't know if it still does), if (seemingly) every high school cheerleader and her mom knows about it?

Anyway, just a thought about how things are defined. No big deal either way.

I voted Spinal Tap, (whose "cult" status I also wonder about), but my two favorite cult movies are Welcome to the Dollhouse and FUBAR (which is a fairly recent Canadian mockumentary about two metal heads who try to have one last good time before one of them has surgery for his recently discovered prostate cancer. It's hilarious.)

76. I think that it is a Halloween and midnight showing because it is Culty.
It is not your everyday movie, and neither are most of the ones I listed. Because a lot of people know about something, does that deny it cult status? Men dress up in women's clothing to see it, and people throw toast and rice about. Seems pretty culty to me.

I guess I was thinking more in terms of how aware people are of it now as opposed to the traditions or behaviors that have sprung up around it.

"Because a lot of people know about something, does that deny it cult status?" Well, I lean toward a yes there, but I don't always think it's a bad thing either. It was just an idle thought--I'm not all bent out of shape about it or anything. :)

Edit: And I don't know that awareness denies cult status outright, but it does change the experience of the movie in a way. Again, not exactly bad, just different.

I love the scene where he's describing his ideal van--I forget the exact quote, but I know that there are
"Stars, punctuated by like, planets, and a woman with like a giant fuckin' laser just like, protecting"

Or something like that. Also, "Woman is a Danger Cat!"

99. The Wall
They used to show it at the midnight movies when I was in college, at the West Main Theater in K-zoo.

According to one of my friends who was an usher at Miller Auditorium at WMU, they showed it on campus once and everyone there freaked out and started throwing razor blades and such around the auditorium. She said all the ushers ran for their lives. There must have been some bad stuff going around campus that week.
