I have NOW seen it all - Mennonites on cellphones
Went to the store tonight to pick some necessities up, and when we were leaving, a Mennonite family was walking in (Mennonites are similar to Amish, but allow electricity). Mom, Dad, and an older teen girl. The girl was using a cellphone to text message someone...

Weird.

1. They are way more liberal in the use of technology than the Amish.
Still.

3. I traveled with a mennonite family to china a couple years ago... The dad
wasn't married to the mom, he was dutch and much older than her by at least 40 years; their child was 12 and so lovely. The mom was very modern and had been cast out by her town because she wanted to drive a car.

They were sociable, humorous and very, very kind and highly intelligent. I had destroyed my knee the night before the flight and was wheel-chaired and assisted by the crew and in the airports and on the buses, at the hotel, etc. They were always looking after me a bit, helping out my traveling companion.

They were lovely people to get to know, and one of the more unique families I ever encountered, staying to some old ways, but embracing the modern wide world. They were planning to spend xmas in Paris. The girls both always wore their traditional dresses and the gentleman a suit.

4. No phone cord = no technology
Wireless is a good theological match for those who don't understand how it works.

7. You must have a different brand of Mennonite where you live
There's huge Mennonite church in town. They dress like everyone else. Their services are also simultaneouly translated (via headset):

Sunday Morning:
8:30 am - Korean
10:00 am - Korean, French, Cantonese, Japanese, Russian and Romanian
11:30 am - Spanish, Korean, Mandarin & Cantonese

They also stream their services, so people can watch online. They post mp3 files of their services for people to use on iPods.

All in all - pretty tech friendly.

8. I can do ya one better.
While in PA with my sister-in-law, we went to Sam's Club (yeah, I know, but this is a few years ago). We saw an Amish couple looking at the Jurassic Park lunch boxes!

When we told my brother about it later, he asked "Dost thou have this in black?"

9. That is funny
I also have a funny Sam's Club story. I was in a Sam's years ago, and I saw two Buddhist Monks discussing rates with the T-Mobile rep there.

:wow:

like 10 years ago and this either Mennonites or amish family was walking around in the store. I'm there with my parents and they are getting a new TV, I walk past this 60 Inch Big Screen TV and the father of this family is just standing there with his mouth open like he's catching flies staring at this TV for a good 20 minutes.
