How come UK tv shows are limited to 6 or 13 episodes per season?

How come UK tv shows are limited to 6 or 13 episodes per season?

American shows get 26... :(

because of it there are only 25 episodes of Father Ted and that makes me sad!

and the short seasons allow them to continue their stage work

Also, there may be a gap of a couple of years between seasons because of difficulty in scheduling all the actors together.

Some of the programs were planned to only be two or three seasons, such as "To The Manor Born" and "Mulberry"

Also, for the most part their programs are not written by teams, but by one person.

I learned all this from interviews with various BBC personalities who have visited Dallas for BegAThon specials.

3. It's because the British market is much smaller

and they can only afford smaller runs than American equivalents. If a show is given a 23 episode season and flops, it is a prodigious expense.
