19. Racism and homophobia
http://law.richmond.edu/jurispub/1999/11/Nov99-Cecil2.html

Apparently, they limited their black staff to working in places that were out of site and they previously had listed homosexuality as a being against their corporate policy. Cracker Barrel says they're equal-opportunity now, but I still prefer not to support them.

I go mainly for the shopping. They are the closest place to me that carries Yankee Candles. I also pick up Stewart's Orange & Cream soda while I'm there.

food we could find in our part of Ohio. We don't go anymore since we are back in the South and can get decent Southern cooking at mom and pop restaurants. Does yinz mean the same thing as you'ens?

15. Alright food, awful politics
The rest of my family is absolutely in love with Cracker Barrel, and would probably choose to pay for a meal there over having a free meal at a 5-star restaurant. They also used to fire openly gay employees, and their political contributions are firmly GOP.

24. Same with my family
When I'm with my mother or either of my two sisters, it's a miracle if less than 1/2 the eat-out meals aren't at Cracker Barrel.

I call it miniscule and mediocre. The veggies are OK but I can't find a tolerable main course other than turkey which is a once a week lunch special. The portions aren't enough and the absolute worst meat loaf, onion rings and roast beef I've ever had all came at Cracker Barrel. Sometimes those entrees are fine but at least once each they were unedible.

It is a great place if you want to waste two hours or or more at midday on a weekend. Stick your name on the list and you might as well snooze on the rockers out front before any hope your name will be called.

23. Funny you should ask....

I actually like the food, and the one near me has excellent service and employs a lot of minorities.

Their politics almost made me write them off, but I found a more entertaining strategy, which was actually suggested to me by a gay friend.

Whenever he's in town, we call up these other two friends of ours who are also gay, one of them a black man. And we go eat at Cracker Barrel. While I'm the only straight man of the bunch, I can be quite flamboyant if I want to be, so along with my friends, we turn it up a notch, acting pretty much like the bigots expect us to act but not how we actually do act anywhere else. It makes pretty much everyone around us incredibly uncomfortable, especially the wait-staff. We've given up hope that we'll get kicked out ... we never cross the line into outright obnoxiousness, just what the standard Okie crowd considers bizarre behavior for a group of men.

Maybe it's childish, but it makes for a fun evening.

25. My daughter almost ran over Zell Miller in one.
I love the chain, and have since I first visited one some 30 years ago in Tennessee. Didn't see another one for fifteen years or so after that, then they started sprouting up nationally. When their hiring practices became public I stopped going, but they straightened those up. I don't believe in punishing people for actions that they have stopped, so I go.

Also, I'm vegetarian, so they are one of the few places I can get decent food on the road. So, one time when I was driving from Austin to Connecticut to pick up a Prius with my parents, a niece, and my daughter, we stopped at a Cracker Barrel on Jimmy Carter Blvd in Atlanta. This older, well-dressed gentleman sat across from us, with a younger man in a suit who seemed the typical underling sort--nodding a lot, paying close attention, quick to react to the older man's actions, etc. My mother kept staring at him, until finally she said "That's Zell Miller!" She continued to stare throughout the whole meal, admitting finally that she didn't know whether to be impressed at seeing someone famous or disgusted at who he was. (She lives in Mississippi, and doesn't run into famous people, like, ever).

ANyway, still not sure it was him, but he did get a bit of attention. One younger couple had their picture taken with him, and a couple of people interrupted his meal to shake hands, so he was someone of reknowned. Living in Austin, I routinely run into people like Ann Richards, and hang out with people who knew the Bush twins or Matthew McCougnehy, so I'm not so impressed by celebrities, so I ignored him. After the meal, my five year old daughter and I are playing in the store with toy cars, and she rolls one across the floor (I know, Lynnesin would crucify me for letting my child enjoy her life, but oh well) and the car struck the foot of Zell Miller. If it was him. I apologized, and he just smiled gently down at her and nodded at my apology. Probably wondering when he could recruit her for the military to blow her cute little head off, I guess.

ANyway, aside from that I love Cracker Barrel. Man, the things you write about when you can't sleep...

26. the one closest to where I live has black waitstaff...dunno
'bout the other...are you supposed to ask your waitstaff about their sexual orientation (is it stamped on their forehead?)

anyway the food is good, breakfast is great, portions are generous...and I like the feeling I get of stepping back in time...

don't eat there that often but, I think that with any chain it pretty much depends on the management of each particular restaurant...

33. I like their food, the ones I have been in have black
employees and I see plenty of black customers. I have never seen anyone with a sign saying they are homosexual, so I don't know about that.
If you are ever in Cambridge Ohio they have a busboy that is worth a stop to see in action, he is unbelievable. They had a story on him on one of the TV news shows maybe it was 20/20. He will pace the floor in front of the fireplace, drop a fork he will be at your table in 2 seconds to pick it up and give you a new one, if a table empties he has it cleaned off in about 10 seconds. I have two criticisms, the place is noisy with the tile floors it's hard to carry on a conversation and it's a haven for W04 bumper stickers.

"I'd like vegetables cooked in butter, then covered in butter when served. I'd also like everything else on the menu covered/cooked/dunked in enough butter to choke a horse, with a side of butter on the side. Also, I would like an assortment of fried foods, covered in butter after being fried."

"And a Diet Coke."

Oh, and the chairs they sell suck too.

35. Well some of what I see here disturbs me
I didn't realize CB had a rep for racism. My wife loves it I like it well enough for some things, like for pies or fried chicken or breakfast in general or something. Their biscuits are disappointing and they obliterate veggies.

We rarely go particularly since there isn't one nearby but perhaps we'll stop even that no great loss in my book.

36. I stopped in one outside of atlanta after bonnaroo
The cracker barrel I stopped in on the way home from Bonnaroo was a travesty of justice. It was on I-24 somewhere just east of the Georgia state line.. and I walked in and ordered a simple two pancake, two egg style breakfast. Half an hour later, still no food. Then, my waitress came around and said "oops, sorry the kitchen lost the ticket...." and then she proceeded to walk by two other tables and tell them the same sob story.

I sat there and thought, the kitchen lost three tickets? I don't think so. More like, she forgot to turn them in, as she didn't ask anyone at any of the tables what they'd ordered to make up new tickets. So, I gave her another 15 minutes.

After 45 minutes of waiting on two lousy pancakes and two scrambled eggs, I just got up and left. I thought about saying something to the manager but figured it wouldn't get me anywhere. Then, I hit the Mcdonalds drive-thru and continued the drive home.

38. Ok, I'll finally give my $0.02 on CB
I'm not a big fan, but I-70 has a shitload of them so, when I drive between IL and PA, it is easy to go there.

I never heard of all the they don't like blacks/gays thing

I always found their theme to be a tad corny, but the food is decent compared to burger czars

I have heard from a friend with a restricted diet due to MS, that they were extremely accomodating as far as making substitutions for her, and I must give credit for that.
