Fucking Jeff "Skunk" Baxter!! Yarrrgh! YARRRGH!
Edited on Mon Jun-26-06 09:34 PM by WritingIsMyReligion
Great guitarist who had to turn out to be utter Repuke craziness. Damn, his playing is way cool....but I want to hurl when I think about his politics. Fortunately, he seemed to be in *fairly* solo territory politics-wise when he was with the 'Dan. From Donald Fagen's solo website:

Fagen reveals here that “Mary Shut The Garden Door” - with its hints of “War of The Worlds” type attack - was in fact inspired by another different though still scary invasion. “Actually I wrote that one right after the Republican Convention came to Manhattan,” he recalls. “I’d much rather be fighting aliens - although there are some similarities. I think it’s safe to say that my fears at the time were borne out to the letter.”

http://www.donaldfagen.com/biography.php, sixth paragraph down.

But, getting back to "Skunk" and the ilk--what other musicians/artists/etc, if any, are partially or wholly ruined for you because of their politics?

:)

2. Don't confuse "The Skunk" with
...Walter Becker!

Don't take Baxter's nuttiness out on Steely Dan!

Ain't no WAY no 'puglican had any hand in this:

"Steely Dan Brooklyn lyrics"

A race of angels
Bound with one another
A dish of dollars
Laid out for all to see
A tower room at eden rock
His golf at noon for free
Brooklyn owes the charmer
Under me

His lady’s aching
To bring a body down
She daily preaches
On where she wants to be
An evening with a movie queen
A face we all have seen
Brooklyn owes the charmer
Under me

A case of aces
Done up loose for dealing
A piece of island cooling in the sea
The whole of time we gain or lose
And power enough to choose
Brooklyn owes the charmer
Under me

5. Fuckin' A, I LOVE that song!
I love Can't Buy a Thrill, and I ADORE the 'Dan...Baxter's idiocy or not!

"Only a Fool Would Say That"

A world become one
Of salads and sun
Only a fool would say that
A boy with a plan
A natural man
Wearing a white stetson hat
Unhand that gun begone
There's no one to fire upon
If he's holding it high
He's telling a lie

CHORUS:
I heard it was you
Talkin' 'bout a world
Where all is free
It just couldn't be
And only a fool would say that

The man in the street
Draggin' his feet
Don't wanna hear the bad news
Imagine your face
There is his place
Standing inside his brown shoes
You do his nine to five
Drag yourself home half alive
And there on the screen
A man with a dream

CHORUS

Anybody on the street
Has murder in his eyes
You feel no pain
And you're younger
Then you realize

CHORUS

13. Politics isn't everything
Edited on Tue Jun-27-06 09:24 AM by billyskank
If he's a great guitarist making great music then that's just a fact, whether he's a commie or a nazi. There's nothing wrong with enjoying the music even if you find the politics abhorrent.

Otherwise we're no different to those fools smashing up Dixie Chicks CDs because Natalie Maines said something bad about the President.

:hi:

15. Not really.
I wouldn't equate a disinclination to listen to something with building a CD bonfire.

16. I see a difference in degree, but not in kind
"I like this musician's work but I dislike their politics so I will avoid their music" only makes sense as a protest or boycott, but in that case I would argue that it is an ill-aimed one.

The Dixie Chicks thing, on the other hand, was an exercise in intimidation rather than a protest. Still, both spring at root from a "them and us" mentality which is the reason why US politics is so fucked up.

17. There's a third excluded term.
"I like this musician's work, but his/her politics are repellent, and knowing this interferes with my enjoyment of it."

And I'd dispute that a boycott - which is a personal choice, albeit one that can be politicized and practiced en masse - is only a difference in degree from the actual destruction of cultural produce, which is not only an act of violence, it's pragmatic intent is to prevent others from consuming it. I see that as very much a difference in kind, and not merely degree.

I just think of his astounding solo in "Bodhisattva" and everything's good in my world.
