Paging Oeditpus Rex and other knowledgeable car people.

I'm considering buying a 1965 Mercury Comet, and it's in pretty good shape. There's one issue though. The flywheel makes an awful racket, especially in 2nd gear, and it jumps out of 2nd gear. I was wondering if this a major issue which will require a huge investment in cash, or if it seems minor.

Thoughts?

I didn't know that you enjoyed tinkering with old cars.

6. I do. This one at least is operational.
If it's basically a decent driver, I can handle the basic repairs. It's a neat old car, for sure.

10. I used to do most of my own mechanical work until cars started having ...

brains. :grr:
Life was easier in the old days when that car was new.

11. That car's got a beautifully simple 200 straight 6.
Three on the tree, too. :D

the transmission needs repaired or replaced. It sounds like a bad shifting fork which is in the transmission.
It could be about a thousand dollars but take at
least 750.00 of the price of the car.
Buy the car!!!!!!!!

5. Hey just tell the person
to take off about 750.00 for the car. You can
find someone to replace the transmission for that.

7. I'll call a tranny place tomorrow and see how much repairs would be.
I'll do some more research and really think about this car.

8. My thoughts:
An Inconvenient Truth is a powerful and disturbing call to action.

I really have to get out of retail.

Sarah is dangerous when she drinks.

Oh, about cars? I have no thoughts on that.

12. You sure it's the flywheel?
From the photo, that looks like a three-speed manual, so I'm thinkin' it could also be the pressure plate or throwout bearing. (Those suckers make a hell of a noise when they go out.) If that's the case, it's a relatively easy fix. Replacing a flywheel's not a huge deal to a mechanic, either, but if that's it I'd be wondering what else might be wrong. A warped flywheel could screw up the crank, so I'd check it for oil leaks/burning and compression.

And then you've gotta wonder what screwed up the flywheel in the first place. Has the transmission been off and somebody didn't re-torque it properly? If that's it, why was the transmission off and what else did they screw up?

Gee, I'm a big help, huh?

13. The owner did admit that the tranny had been misaligned at one time.
So, my thought was that had warped the flywheel. The noise is present when the car is at idle, but most pronounced in 2nd.

Aw, hell, I dunno. Someone else will probably buy it tomorrow anyway.

16. Well, if you think the car's cool enough
Have the seller knock it down to a grand. Shouldn't be too hard to find a replacement tranny from one of the NOS parts houses. And manual 3-speeds from back then just ain't that expensive.

It's the labor that'll kill ya. :grr:

17. No, but it could simulate that
by making the clutch disc chatter.

And anyway, I'm always thinking if one thing's wrong, something connected to it might be, too.
