Someone is trying to kill my dog.
I'm mentally and emotionally wiped - but the cliff notes version:

Tuesday AM, woke up and let dog out before heading to the shower. Wanted him to come in for 15 minutes or so before I left for work (for the last 2 weeks instead of being crated he's been staying outside with the elderly neighbor during the day) so he could eat etc. before I left. Went to call him in - no answer. Yelled loudly 4 times. I was just getting ready to look for him when he comes from around the side of my neighbor's house. (the neighbor has removed part of the falling-down fence between us so my dog has access and full run of both fenced in yards) He was panting, slightly staggering, hunched up, and foaming at the mouth. I got him in the house, and he just stood there with his eyes looking crazy - darting back and forth. I tried to call him into the kitchen to see if he'd drink anything and he took a few steps and layed down. When I went toward him he stood, and that's when I saw the puddle of jelly-goo on the floor where his butt was. I took him outside and that was when I noticed that jelly-ish liquid was just streaming from his rear, even though he was making no attempt to try and go. I don't even know if he was aware it was happening. Cut to the chase - got him to the vet, he had to stay the whole day - they made him throw up and gave him the charcoal treatment. He came home and was lethargic and not himself. Drank water but wouldn't eat. Threw up ALL the water in the middle of the night and thought he was bad. :( Finally ate at 10:45 Wed. morning and started perking up. Seemed much more like himself yesterday evening.

Thursday morning (today) - get up, let him outside. Go out with him and walk around the yard while waiting for him to go to see if anything seems out of sorts. Everything looks good. Took him over to the neighbor when I left for work. At about 10:30 I realized I left something at home - and since I only live 2.5 miles from the office I ran home really quick. My dog bounded over to see me as happy as could be - he DEFINITELY is back to being his old self. My dog took off running around the side of my house - and for some reason I followed. As I walk back I see something that doesn't look right laying on the concrete slab in my yard that sits in front of the back gate. I go to further investigate and I find 2 large-ish balls of raw hamburger that have been dropped over the fence into my yard. I immediately run for my neighbor's and ask him to come out to witness what I'm seeing. After he gets out there I take a stick and cut one of the balls in half. It's center is FILLED with some sort of poison granules.

Someone is trying to kill my dog. He could have been dead today had I not come home so early (I usually come home for lunch around 3pm), and he could have easily died on Tuesday. My dog is well loved, well behaved, and we jokingly say he has a fan club - so many people are so enamored with him. He doesn't bark outside, he doesn't leave his yard. This can't be someone after my DOG. It has to be someone (but WHO? I have no idea) after ME. It has to be someone that knows that first attempt didn't work, and it has to be someone that knows when I leave and made sure to leave the poison *after* I went to work this time so there wouldn't be a chance to save him.

I did call the police, and they did meet me at my house to investigate. There's really nothing they can do, though.

I'm frightened for the safety of my family.

8. I'm looking into buying some sort of system -
my friend and boss offered to send me the money if that's what it takes. Need to research first - don't know what's good and what's not, then place an order. I don't want one that's visible - and I won't tell anyone when I get one. If it's someone I know I want the fucker ON VIDEO. I want there to be absolutely no doubt who it is - for my peace of mind, and so there will be no question.

6. Time for some stealth video surveill. And save that burger/poison
in your freezer. The composition of both substances may be a good piece of identifying evidence. Could be a neighbor. Could be a professional burglar. Could be a random nut. Anyways, keep fido inside.

13. This is Podunk, USA.
I'm lucky the cops even came out - let alone collected a sample of the poison to send off to some crime lab. Honesly, I didn't expect that much from these yahoos. I DID ask about keeping it though - thought about putting it in the freezer. He said it was not needed.

Thanks for the good thoughts about the dog.

FWIW - the meat is in the black plastic trashcan outside - sealed in a ziploc. It's possible to still freeze it -- but would I want to?

I'd retrieve that ziplock and stick in a coffee can and stick it in your freezer. What if you hear about a crime similar to yours in which poison/meat is used? What if you ever are the victim of another attack and this time you have a suspect. The cops can then search their garage and might find similar poison pellets or better yet, half a package of ground meat in a freezer which they can match to yours. Dont you watch Court TV? Its the little things that trips crooks up.

15. This person is dangerous. They're starting with animals but God
knows what the hell else they are capable of. Think about moving. I don't think it is about you or your dog. It's a very very disturbed individual lookiing for sick thrills.

This person is one of your neighbors.

Put a flyer describing the incident in all of your neighbors' mailboxes. This may not be the first incident - and I bet he will try again with other animals. They need to be warned. Also, they can help keep an eye out.

just sick. If it happened to me, I would probably walk the dog on a leash all around the neighborhood knocking on doors and warning people about the pet poisoner.... might give you an idea who it is from reactions. Just a suggestion. Good luck and let us know.

(small town, we all must use the post office for mail), the liquor store, the front window of the telephone/cable/internet co. ....

One of my bosses called and put the word out to a bunch of people he knows in the general area I'm in - my neighbor has told a bunch of people and passed on the word at the bar down the street. Doesn't take long for things to get around around here.

28. You should also contact your local animal control just in case other
incidents have happened, on the off chance it isn't your ex.

It's just important to document what's going on.

Also, the AC might have more 'teeth' so to speak in putting pressure on the cops to investigate further, etc. It never hurts to have allies.

11. Do not let that dog outside out of your sight again
Kennel him if you have to.

And I'll bet you the criminal will try to casually "stoll" by your place from time to time because they can't resist trying to see what's going on. Probably when they think you are at work.

It's probably not someone who works during the day - any teenagers in your neighborhood?

Hire a private detective - I have before for a personal matter. Or a security guard.

17. I'm not.
I have left him with my neighbor - who keeps him in his sight at all times. I can't help but be PISSED though that my dog has to be punished by being crated and not allowed to enjoy his OWN YARD because some freaked out sick asshole has a twisted way of getting his jollies.

Not many teenagers - and it really does seem targeted, not random.

I hate to think it's possible, but I have an ex/boyfriend that's a hardcore alcoholic that's obsessed with me, jealous, controlling and insists I give him "one more" chanceS while begging me to marry him and have his baby. :eyes: He is also a pathological liar. Told me he was out of town working all week when I saw him Tuesday, Wed, and today. He wonders if I'm going to believe him, or my own lying eyes.
Can't put anything past an addict.

24. Ok, but make sure everyone else knows about the ex. Tell your
neighbor, your family, your friends. When there is an addict/alcoholic pathological liar lurking in your life, you should NOT hide it. It's embarrassing, but you have to expose him and protect yourself. Video surveillance and any alarm system you can get.

He knows the truck, so he'll be on the lookout. Also told one of my bosses (in another office across the state), another one I think suspects, and I have a friend at work that knows the whole story from the beginning.

Definitely want the video.

This is also one liberal chick that was raised by a good old union democrat that owned a gun shop for a number of years. I'm armed to the teeth. I know how to use them. I wouldn't WANT to. But I could.

32. UPDATE -
I found out today that the sister of a guy I work with had her dog poisoned too. Highly suspect because the friend/ex/boyfriend I mentioned in another post lives across the street from her. I called her and verified that her dog was indeed poisoned the SAME morning mine was (tuesday), and was found laying in the yard next to the guy's in question. Unfortunately she didn't get to her dog as quickly as I found mine and hers is much smaller (chihuahua) so it's still at the vet.

I told her what I suspected and she is going to make sure to keep her other dog tied up, and she is going to do some looking around his back yard when he's not home. No one is going to make any sudden moves or come out with any accusations yet - we are just being very aware and keeping our eyes and ears open.
She's going to try and find out if any other dogs in their area have been poisoned as well. It's rather likely, as a lot of people let their dogs run around there - and his garbage has been gotten into a number of times which has always really pissed him off.

We do not live in the same area, by the way. I'm in the next small town over, about 3 or 4 miles away.

50. Another Update -
The "ex" called me this evening (a few times) - and told me that 5 cops were just at his house asking for the key to the company I work for, and where he's a contractor. He obviously gets that his job is done here, and he's no longer welcome.

There is still some nagging doubt that he is the person that tried to kill my dog.... but there are too many coincidences at the same time. I have a VERY hard time believing that he would do that - but too many things started adding up. The fact that he's a bad alcoholic in a downward spiral doesn't do much for his rational mind either, I'd imagine.

Anyway - I told him I believe he did it, and that I don't want him near me, my house, or my animals. Period.

Now it's a wait and see game until he leaves town. I still won't feel at peace though - what if it WASN'T him? The moment I let my guard down the real perp could strike again and kill my dog for real this time. :(
