Has anyone else received a "vibrating razor" in the mail?

No really. I'm serious. It's a free sample of a vibrating razor called the "Venus Vibrance" by Gilette. Here's a picture:

And it's a razor. A VIBRATING fucking RAZOR! With THREE blades!!! :scared:

I mean holy crap! I look at this thing and keep getting images of the "Psycho" shower scene. Seriously, does anybody really use these things? Do they work? I'm afraid to try it. One of you guys go first and let me know what happens!

Oh, and if you want a FREE one, go here:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009W7MD2/103-0044051-2703049?me=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance&vi=similarities&n=3760901

And yeah, as a matter of fact I DID see that line in their advertising which states "Shaving compact ideal for mounting in the shower or for traveling..." Kind of makes one wonder if it isn't actually a multi-tasking little gadget, so to speak...

Have been sitting trying to come up with a reasonable explanation as to why/how the vibration would make the hair stand up. Still at a loss.

Maybe it just terrifies them, like,

"HOLY SHIT!! Here comes a VIBRATING fucking RAZOR with THREE BLADES!"

I've never had any problems with a plain old disposable razor. But who knows, maybe I am missing out on something really big and just don't realize it. Like a shave that lasts twice as long, or something.

Does your boy like his vibrating razor and/or has he made any comments about how well or differently it works in comparison to others?

7. I only use men's razors
First of all, I don't want a damn pink razor, or almost anything pink, for that matter.

Secondly, they tend to be overpriced, and bulkier than men's razors. I use a Mach 3.

A vibrating razor...:scared: ...although my first thought was "exactly what part of the female anatomy is the vibration for...

9. Yeah, women's razors are pricier for sure

...and just, I don't know, like... odder. I mean I've seen some women's razors in far-out colors and some shaped like dolphins and or whatever, too. Remember the disc shaped ones, with different razors that you rotated?

The vibration part is curious enough to me, but it also comes with three... yes, THREE... tiny little "moisture strips" to "prepare" the skin and hair for the shave. I can't see how those things could possibly work. Isn't that what shaving cream/soap is for?

12. Oh, yes
I remember the disk ones! They were pink, and an awful shade of orange as well.

Even the men's have moisture strips. I think they just need to put more doo-dads on the blades to justify the high price. Look - it's a bonus!

For that matter, I use men's shaving creme, too - the women's is double the price. I'll spend my money on body lotion, not shaving creme.

Being that this is a potentially hazardous new product I can't help but wonder if we are unwittingly a part of their safety trials. Like if they "randomly" send them out to people like us, but keep track of who has them and then watch the obits in the ensuing weeks for our names.

20. Congratulations on your new vibrator!
Edited on Fri Jun-30-06 10:46 AM by Hell Hath No Fury
Columnist Mark Morford did a piece on this interesting little piece of equipment. It seems, on the mens version, the head of the razor vibrates -- on the womens, the flat of the HANDLE vibrates. Why the difference? Well, with the vibrating handle a woman can use it as, well, a vibrator. An inexpensive vibrator she can pick up at the local grocery store with little fuss or embarrassment -- in other words, the perfect vibrator for places like Texas and other sexaully repreased areas. :D Clever, no?

Speaking of Mark, I just dug up his column:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/gate/archive/2005/06/15/notes061505.DTL

Another Hard, Hot Pink Shave
Ladies! Facing a long, lonely night alone with your stubble? You need a vibrating razor
By Mark Morford, SF Gate Columnist
Wednesday, June 15, 2005

It's long, it's smooth, it's gently, undulatingly curvy. It's hot pink, with a large, rounded tip, perfect for gripping and perfect for sending soft sensual signals up your leg and down your vertebrae as you stroke, up and down, down and up, slowly, carefully, lovingly.

...Here is what you must do. You must visit the Gillette Web site dedicated to the Vibrance, and look. You must admire the cloying marketing cleverness, the not-at-all subtle sexual overtones, the shameless soft-porn lushness that makes women absolutely goddamn hell-yes believe they truly must waste 20 bucks on a silly vibrating pink razor, even though they know they can buy a case of about 50 perfectly good disposable razors from Costco for a fraction of the cost and still have enough left over for a real Sterling mini vibrator and a chocolate cupcake.

...How can we tell, by the way, that this thing is a vibrator in disguise? I mean, besides the hot smooth fleshy pinkness and the rounded penile tip and besides the fact that the portion of the razor's handle that vibrates most powerfully is actually the large, rounded end without the razor blades on it?

36. I have to admit, it really DID strike me as a vibrator as much as a razor

...the first time I saw it. And the entire razor head is even removable... you know, to "change the blades..."

The only thing I don't get is that if they wanted to capitalize on its potential as a vibrator, then design-wise it seems they would have put the battery opening in the end of the handle toward the blade instead of toward the farther end. Then again, maybe it is not meant to be... um... submersed.

But anyway. If the good people at Gilette want to give women in sexually repressed environments the opportunity to, as you said, purchase vibrators cleverly disguised as razors at any grocery store and keep them in the bathroom in plain view without any shame, along with the perfect alibi to cover their use, well then I say... Hell yeah! Good on 'em! Way to empower our sisters, people!

It is truly an innovative and liberating idea whose time has... um... arrived.

Of course, I'm a man so it's a different model and all.

I was a little skeptical about the vibrating aspect, but it's great. I have fairly coarse beard hairs and semi-sensitive skin; the vibrating razor not only gives me a much closer shave, but also doesn't really irritate my skin at all.

58. UPDATE. I tried the damn thing out today...

...and lived to post about it.

Okay, so I shaved one side (legs and pits) with the vibrator turned "on" and the other side with it turned "off," to see if the fact that it is a vibrating razor made any difference. Drum roll, please......

The vibrating made NO difference! At least, none that I could tell. I will say however that I got a significantly closer shave with this shaver than with the regular old cheap disposable, twelve to a dollar pack I usually buy. Although one could probably attribute that outcome to the fact that this razor has three blades as opposed to the one blade that my regular razor has, moreso than crediting the vibrating thing. I would also note that the triple aloe strips made my legs feel kinda slimy (eew).

For the record and in the interest of fairness, I noticed that several people both here and in the Amazon reviews state that the vibrations alone DID give them a smoother, closer shave, but they also noted that they have thick and/or coarse hair, which I do not have. Therefore, it may be simply that my sparse and scrawny hairs are no match for any razor and I'm not a good person to evaluate the relative merits of razors, much less vibrating razors. So there may be something to be said for the vibrating thing after all. Kind of like the electric knife that my Dad used to use at Thanksgiving, I guess. Same principle.

But anyway, thanks to all you guys who checked in and gave me the courage to try out this new gizmo. Though the vibrator thing struck out for me, I MAY be willing to plunk down a little extra coin for a razor with three blades the next time I'm in the market.
