I went to a Christmas pageant today...
My partner's friend brought us two tickets to a Christmas pageant at his church. I am very apprehensive about going to straight churches because of the way most of them feel about me and other gay people. I told my partner that since the tickets came from his friend I would go, but the minute they started speaking in tongues or dancing with snakes I was outta there!! Well, the pageant was a HUGE production, it must have cost them several thousand dollars to put this thing on, but the only thing I could think of was looking down at my feet to see if anything was crawling around down there. I just absolutely despise the religious right. Am I wrong to feel this way?

1. you kinda remind me of my brother-in-law, Bronc...
He's a Fundy. He accepts me & my partner because we must be different -- I'm sure he thinks we are the exception, and that all other gay folk are disease-ridden whores who wish to Wreak the Destruction of All That Is Holy. But he's not a bad sort.

Okay, now don't panic; here's how you remind me of him:

Your discomfort at the pageant seems to me to be analogous to his discomfort the one time he came to hear me sing w/ my GLBT/friendly chorus. My sister told me later that he worried all night that someone was going to come on to him.

It's a discomfort level.

Were you so uncomfortable that you couldn't enjoy the show? How was the production?

BTW, have I welcomed you to DU yet? :hi:

3. The production was GREAT!!
It was so elaborate that whoever put it together should do that as their full time job. I guess I was just a little uncomfortable. I really did look around to see if there were any Falwell or Robertson clones milling about. Thanks for the welcome :-) I promise I'll behave while I'm here. :-)

2. It is time for the Christian Right to meet the Right Christians
Don't conflate the 700 Clubbers with mainstream American Christianity. Pat Robertson, et al want you to do so, but most religious people are just regular folks, who have a faith and take it--to greater or lesser extents--seriously.

That's all.

4. Thanks, since you put it that way it is
a little easier to take. You can't imagine the things that were going through my head before we got there.
