Hi I'm Crewleader! Some friends like to call me Crew and others call me Crewleader, I like both so it doesn't matter.

I've been a member here at DU since Jan.22, 2001 when I signed on but I did lurked the first two days.

I moderated two terms, and enjoyed opening up the Lounge and always believed in it's concept of meeting friends. This community has grown because of it. The Grand Opening of The Lounge link is below.

I don't see to many names that I'm familiar with anymore,I miss many of the names of DUers' that I haven't crossed in awhile.

and that name comes from a really good David Bowie song. I had a habit of creating names from titles of songs I really like (another on is MrKnight (Coltraine) from my chess.net account). People usually don't address me here but my name is Charles. I'm a graduate student of mathematics, and I nearly joined the Social Equality Party (socialist) until I'd heard of Dennis Kucinich, he's running for president you know? Yeah, democrat, you can check out his website and many plans at http://www.kucinich.us.

I'm a dad. I play bass. And occasionally get angry in a public way here at the DU. I love Thomas Jefferson, I read about him in "The Portable Thomas Jefferson" a book I bought for a dime at the library. I also love Dennis Kucinich, as you know, he should be our president, and if he should fail to get the nomination, then I fear Bush wins. Democrats say he's unelectable I know, and pick an "electable" candidate. But I fear that my fellow Democrats fail to realize that there is no beating Bush without elevating the discussion. It can't happen without elevating the discussion! It just can't. Dennis is the only one providing the avenue for this to happen, period -> .

So that's me, that's what I fight for, and I prefer vodka martini's and a beautiful woman (my wife) in conversation.

and you are so correct about Dennis, he's the candidate with the biggest heart for the working families of America and I will gladly vote for him when he's nominated!
He's right up there in my top choice friend believe me!

Indeed she told me something earlier this fall that warmed my heart to no end. Back when I was trying to understand the early version of the energy bill (back in spring/summer 02) and try to get people informed - so we could react... It felt like only a few people ever read or responded to those threads. Low and behold when things got cooking again this fall - more responded... and buddhamama reminded me of something I had said on one of the threads eons earlier - when I felt like a lone DUer - who no one really knew - who was trying to kick an issue into the mainstream (of du) conscience... and it felt futile. I learned - thanks to her - that because the issues are/were complex many didn't have much to comment - but many read, and learned and were active. This fall when it came back up - the threads were better read (tho nothing compared to the candidate threads)... some new to the issue... some who had begun to learn about it through the earlier threads - and who had followed various stories over the next year and a half.

It made me realize that even when not many people respond... many more are reading and thinking about much of what is posted. Very validating. To the newer posters on DUer - may this give some perspective.... for the longest time I didn't know if ANYONE read what I wrote... but I kept writing... found a few others who responded... and over time felt as if I was part of the community... and later realized that many folks were reading all along. :D

And we were writing during a period, if I am correct, while you were less active. I just found DU a couple of weeks ago...in fact I went to my first DU event in Burbank a week after I found it, such nice and interesting folks!

I was first introduced to politics at age 4 when I started to hate Rush Limbaugh, then at age 5, I announced that since I loved Bill Clinton that I was a Democrat, following a very bad punishment from my Republican father.

I was first able to fully understand politics at age 9, when I read Al Franken's "Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot", which was like a god send to me.

I cannot recall when I signed onto DU. At first I used to read it on my Palm IIIc when they had an avantgo channel. I always loved the Top 10 Conservative Idiots!! Made for great reading on the bus ride to work.

I did not discover the message boards until much later and then began posting away.

I live in St Louis and have been an activist for many years. Although I am a staunch supporter of universal health care I work for an insurance company. While at work I try to educate my fellow workers about the need for universal health care (see we get fed A LOT of propaganda as to why universal healthcare is a bad thing).

I came here on my search for that sort of Americans that I new from my childhood. I grew up in Germany, and my parents had a grocer´s shop where American soldiers used to buy. American soldiers where the heroes of my childhood, and I grew up in the strong believe: America brought us humanity and freedom and peace after WWII. When I had to accept that American soldiers are sent out to kill for Halliburton´s sake, it was a very sad moment. In the beginning it was impossible to find any news about America except Fox etc.

Well, I was introduced to DU in during the Florida Recount Debacle but never registered until last spring. Usually spend *much* more time reading the posts than responding to them and am very, very grateful to dutiful and frequent posters to LBN (it seems I'm always a day to a week ahead of the news curve than most of my other pals).

So to be honest, I still feel kinda like a newcomer around here as there's only a small handful of particular posters whose sobriquet's are familiar to me. That and the fact that I've only pissed off two other posters with my opinions (that I'm aware of... if I've pissed anyone else off, please tell me so I can feel more at home!).

My sincere thanks goes out to all the moderator's, Skinner, et.al., and even the weirdo's ;-) for all their hard work and dedication in making DU my one-stop news/entertainment/additional-perspective place!!!
