New Agency Says Saddam Detained in Iraq

TEHRAN, Iran - Former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) has been detained in Iraq (news - web sites), Iran's official news agency reported Sunday.

"Saddam Hussein was arrested in his hometown of Tikrit," IRNA quoted top Iraqi leader, Jalal Talabani as saying. It gave no further details.

In Iraq, a separate rumor that Saddam was captured or killed near Tikrit sent hundreds of exultant people into the streets of this northern Iraqi city Sunday. They fired in the air in celebration and congratulated each other.

In Baghdad, a spokeswoman for the U.S.-led occupation notified reporters that a "very important" announcement will be made at a news conference scheduled for 7 a.m. EST, but did not say who would be the speaker. The spokeswoman requested anonymity.

In Tikrit, rumors that the former dictator was in custody were making the rounds, but reporters attached to the 4th Infantry Division, the U.S. unit in charge of security in the area, said there was no unusual activity there overnight or early Sunday.

"We are celebrating like it's a wedding," said Mustapha Sheriff, a resident of Kirkuk. "We are finally rid of that criminal."

"This is the joy of a lifetime," said Ali Al-Bashiri, another Kirkuk resident. "I am speaking on behalf of all the people that suffered under his rule."

Saddam, who ruled Iraq for 23 years until his ouster in April, has been a fugitive since then with a $25 million bounty on his head.

Rumors about Saddam's capture or death periodically surface, and a hotline set up by the occupation authorities for tips on his whereabouts is flooded with callers.

4. If it is him, other countries that didn't support the war might...
...be more willing to help out.

Maybe.

9. Bush is still in office.
I think that at this point, given the continual disrespect coming from the White House, the chances of other countries hopping on board to help are still somewhere between slim to none.

3. Bear in mind he had 764,345 body doubles and lookalikes...
...so it might NOT be him, which would suck for all involved...'cept Saddam.

14. The point now is to KEEP him alive, so he can stand trial.
That's the only way to placate the Iraqi people. They were denied this when the U.S. decided to assassinate his sons and deny the Iraqi people their revenge. I am pretty amazed that they would capture him alive. This is good news.

17. i'm with you
Now, if it results in pulling out all US troops and sending in the UN, then hurrah, but since that ain't gonna' happen, it just leaves me with that strong belief that the US should not be proud of invading another nation for illegitmate reasons and taking out the leader. We should NOT feel good about that, imho.

Edited on Sun Dec-14-03 06:29 AM by soothsayer
Ok, I'm glad he's alive, too---makes us a wee bit more humane. But eeeesh. Revenge?

Maybe justice is a better word, but yer prolly closer with that ugly word revenge.

If Hussain stands trial Bush goes down for war crimes.
a little something like this...

SH - "Why did you invade my country?"

GWB - "You had WMD's."

SH - "So where are they? Did we use any?"

GWB - mumblemumbele mumble

SH - "what? I can't hear you."

GWB - "We can't find them and no you didn't use any."

SH - "Did we attack your country?"

GWB - mumbleyGDangmumble

SH - Did you use illegal Depleted Uranium Weapons on my people?

GWB - mumbleyF'n Dickmumbley mum...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They will not let Saddam stand trial..... unless it's in Florida.
Here's what may have happened to BinLaden.
(who also cannot stand trial for similar reasons.)
U.S.troops in a raid in Tikrit Iraq last night captured an Iraqi identified as Saddam Hussein, officials in Baghdad and Washington said early this morning.
26. I can barely stand to watch football as it is.
On CBS they play that got-damned fanfare every 30 seconds; on Fox they stick in song snippets that they deem appropriate for the moment, not to mention their inability to go five seconds without some insipid sound fx. On both networks the idiot commentators apparently belive their viewers are ignorant of how the game is played. And the play-by-play guys and commentators are all auditioning for "The Adventures of Obviousman." ESPN is much better but I usually can't watch the late game.
Now, today, they're going to play "God Bless America" at every commercial break; there will be endless lousy comments about how this sack looked like the troops breaking in on Saddam or how that incomplete pass reminds the commentator of what he was doing when he heard the news . . . .
I dig watching football, but I think I'll spend today reading.
