20. "Reading DU".
Likewise. For the past year plus, I've been regarding DU as a Distant Early Warning for important events ("The sun never sets on DU").

Our Chicken-Hawk in Chief will be in Full Gloat over this, and will probably spend HOURS before the mirror, practicing his Victory Strut. But with a $25M reward and a massive high-tech posse, every day past that May 1st Photo-Op represents a few points off his score. And at home in Tikrit, all during that intensive search. Bush may have turned a two bit thug into an El Cid style legend.

Three questions:
Will our GIs be able to put their body armor away, and walk through the crowds like conquering heroes?
Will Saddam be tried at the World Court like Milosovec, or will he end up in a closed court in an Undisclosed Location?
What sort of S & M style costume will Bush wear at the News Conference today?

Edited on Sun Dec-14-03 07:29 AM by VermontDem2004
While I was playing some guy came on there 'Saddam was caught.' I thought he was joking so I said 'No he is in my basement', and suddenly freepers invaded praising GW, talking about if they were the soldiers they would've shot him. One guy said 'We can all sleep better at night knowing he's been captured.'

I woke up at 5 am, way too early (not supposed to get up until around 8. Turned on the radio and their it was, about 7 or so, I think. I was dosing. They broke in right after "Tech Nation" with the BBC to annouce that Saddam may have been caught.

Confirmed it with Weekend Edition on NPR at 8 am. Going off to read The Beeb now.

41. Reading DU.
I don't do TV news. And we have an incredible windstorm going on out there; when I stepped out to pick up the morning paper, it was flying across the desert, one page at a time. I believe my helpful dog removed the plastic wrapper.

I'm not surprised. I've always thought we had him somewhere, or knew where he was, to be trotted out when it looked like * was in trouble. We'll get Osama when the general election gets into full swing.

Oops...does that qualify me for :tinfoilhat: ?

Edited on Sun Dec-14-03 12:18 PM by haele
Laz, who was still up and playing on the 'net, woke me up with the news, I mumbled agreement with his points, and went back to sleep to continue my rather lucid dream of being a lost kid in some sort of travelling outcast musician's group in a hostile, post-amagedden factory world. (This has been an exhausting weekend, and I'm out of meds...)
I'm more able to pay attention and make cogent conversation now that I'm really - but now he's asleep!

55. In church, waiting for the service to start...
...when some other members of the congregation started discussing it among themselves.

Here's the :puke: part: the parish has always been a rather progressive place. However, our priest left to move to England with his partner a month ago, so we've been relying on temporary clergy (usually retired ones willing to sub for a week). Anyway, this week we got an elderly priest who, although quite nice on a personal level, was far more conservative (apparently, he used to be Rector of a parish in Virginia next to a military base). Anyway, he decides to cut short his sermon to talk about the "momentous" event of Saddam's capture. He then invites the congregation to "share their thoughts" about this glorious day. He starts asking members of the congregation to volunteer "their hopes" for all the good things that will come to Iraq. In the manner of a schoolteacher quizzing students who don't know the material they're supposed to regurgitate, he haltingly draws out answers from some of the members like "freedom," "peace," "prosperity," "justice" -- yep, all those things that are bound to happen there now that Saddam is behind bars!

:eyes:

To me, what was most annoying about this was not the injection of White House party-line politics into the Eucharist, nor the fact that it was done in a way that suggested a cross between an elementary school indoctrination session and a soft-sell sales pitch, but the sheer naivité of the whole enterprise -- the feeling that he really, sincerely believed the Administration propaganda (against all available evidence), and couldn't even conceive of the possibility that anyone else could see it differently.

At any rate, in an attempt to bring a little realism to the proceedings, I volunteered that my "hope" was that Saddam winds up sharing a cell with Manuel Noriega, since they have so much in common: U.S.-favored strongmen whose crimes we ignored (or even encouraged) while they were doing our bidding, but when each of them decided not to toe the line sufficiently, we suddenly discovered that "Omigod! It turns out he's a tyrant!"

From the look on his face, I don't think the priest got it...
