Poll question: 1912: Who would you have voted for?
1912 we have President William Howard Taft representing the old guard Republicans. Ex-President Theodore Roosevelt representing the Progressive Bull Moose Party. And Gov. Woodrow Wilson representing the Democratic party.

2. Wilson
He was the true progressive, given the standards of the time.

If one is going to complain that Wilson was a white supremacist, then that is correct; he was. However, so were Roosevelt and Taft.

Woodrow Wilson's efforts for peace and the League of Nations put him heads above a third term for Teddy. Its like saying you'd vote for McCain over Edwards because McCain is a "reformer"...

7. Teddy Roosevelt would not be welcome in todays GOP
his ideas about the environment and big business would leave him distincltly out of Republican politics, whereas Wilson was an ardent segregationist and white supremicist rolling back 50 years of work. both had problems totodays conservatives, but TR was not the big conservative idol the Repukes make him out to be

Be nice, now.

I agree: Wilson. Too bad he was so inflexible.

15. Just can't help myself sometimes....

Seriously, in spite of his racial attitudes (which were indefensible-I admit) I honestly believe he was a great man who gave his health (and life) for peace.

My grandfather was born in 1901 and was only given a "first" name and, of course, his fathers last name. He respected Wilson so much that he adopted Wilson as his "middle" name in 1916. My younger brother bears it to this day.

So, yeah, I'm a little prejudiced on Wilson. He's a family hero of sorts...

14. That person must like right-wing Supreme Court Justices...
Taft was the chief justice from 21-30. This was an era when the GOP controlled every branch of power, and divided government simply did not exist.

13. Roosevelt...
For one, he considered himself the highest public servant in the government whose goal is to serve the people, definitely an improvement over King George II who views himself as the King of the United States.

For two, he had a better record than Wilson on racial issues.

For three, Wilson was also a warmonger (WW1), although in 1912 I wouldn't've known that.

As one drawback, though, Roosevelt was an imperialist in his heart whereas Wilson was a professor at Princeton.
