Poll question: How Do you Feel About The News Today of Saddam's Capture?
I have to expound on number 6--because I ran out of room. What I mean is there'll be lots of celebrating, gloating, etc., before the media settles down and starts asking about why it took so long, why it cost so many lives, and when the eventual attacks keep on coming, everyone realizes that our soldiers aren't any safer, nor is the world safer now that we've got him.

through my-cast.com. So there is no need to watch the weather reader on the corporate news.

3. I am glad he has been captured
He needs to stand trial and answer for what he has done to his people. Our troops may be home sooner than if he hadn't been captured. I don't care for the mission, but I support the troops.

4. well...I guess I'm "supposed" to feel good about this
Because he is a <repeat like the good sheep that I am> "brutal dictator" who "killed thousands of his own people."

But he was also a guy who posed no threat to us. And a guy who managed to keep a hostile area of the world relatively sedate (albeith through brutal tactics). And a guy who was a secular muslim leader instead of a hardcore fundamentalist.

But I think in cold, crass political terms. I think it's good for Bush so I think it's bad for me. So I'm not happy, and I don't care if it's politically incorrect to say so.

45. but what really being a liberal?!?!?
Not too long ago, when dictators-for-life (who slaughtered a third-of million of his own people and dumped them into mass-graves) were finally captured and brought to jutice, liberals would cheer! Truly celebrate! Wrongs righted...and all that.

Now we're just supposed to sulk because it's temporarily not expedient, politically?! I'm not real comfortable with such a thick layer of hypocracy, so I'm going let myself feel good about the Iraqis cheering that Saddam is off their backs. We can stand a fight another day. This is a historical moment that's been a long time coming. AndI'm not going to let DU's bizarre, rampant pessimism submerge my common sense. This is good news. Even Dean said so.

situation in Iraq--the attacks on US troops will continue, and the world is now a less safer place because Dumbo spent all our resources on this pointless charade.

9. CNN just said that Gen. Sanchez has said that we can expect attacks
to go up for a while now. I think he's being tooooo optomistic. The attacks are going to increase. The Iraqi people will not demand our exit because the main focus of our supposed intentions has been captured. The Shi'ites will really start to kick Sunni ass, and the Sunni's who've suddenly lost power and status will start to fight back.

This is the non-event of the season. The guy was never going to come back into power in Iraq anyway. He was doomed to spending the rest of his life hiding in "holes". And I would sure hate to be an Iraqi native of Tikrit right now. That whole town will be declared a "terrorist" region simply because he was there hidden for so long.

In the long run this will make the Shi'ites bolder, they will demand we leave now and let them decide the fate of THEIR country because of this.

By the way, can't you hear the negotiations for Saddam's confession as we sit here? "Hey Saddam, you just tell the world that you had WMDs and chemical and biological weapons and we'll see to it that you spend your remaining years in a nice, country-club type prison with all the amenities of home. Satellite tv, microwave, the works."

Oh yeah, and how much access will the outside world have to the guy? We'll never know what he really has to say, what really was going on. Because just like the rebuilding contracts in Iraq that we are going to control completely, the Administration is going to tie this guy up so tight and cut off all access to the outside world. The only stuff that's going to come out is what they want to come out. And I think it will be as dependable as the rest of the "intelligence" that we've gotten about the Iraq situation to date.

19. I'm surprised more than anything
I never thought they'd take him alive--not because he'd fight to the death--but because a live Saddam is dangerous to the Bush GOPNAC Cabal.

As for the occupation of Iraq, I doubt it will make much difference.

This still begs the question about why we invaded in the first place. Conquering the country, killing Iraqis, capturing Saddam--it all only has meaning because the Bushies tell us so. By what authority do we invade and occupy another country and arrest its citizens?

The American media will never ask this or any other of the right questions.

He was never a threat to me or any other American (at least until Bu$hco invaded), so his capture is inconsequential. I'll go about my family and holiday activities today as usual.

24. Still trying to figure out how he plays into the "war on terror"
Where's Osama??????????? Now that capture I could get behind celebrating (even though I realize that it wouldn't be the end to al Qaeda and someone else would take his place as leader once he's captured!). It's difficult to celebrate the capture of this man when I don't feel we should have been there in the first place. Yes, he's an evil man, but it's something we didn't mind (hell, we SUPPORTED him!!!) not so many years ago, all of a sudden he's the devil incarnate???

How can repugs gloat over this?? The attacks against soldiers will still continue, because the people of Iraq don't want us there!! They don't want us to occupy them and maybe our soldiers haven't been briefed on this but our policy with Israel doesn't exactly make us the most popular country among Arabs! I firmly believe that the attacks against our soldiers were not in support of Saddam as much as they were to show that they don't support U.S. occupation.

I just can't help wondering about some timing. Sad to say that Saddam, human-rights nightmare that he has been, is rather irrelevant now. His capture changes nothing about our situation in Iraq, nor will it appreciably soften the feelings of the Iraqi people and the Middle East at large toward the American presence there.

Saddam was a man on the lam with only a few allies left in Iraq. I would feelbetter if they got the WMDs, but we know they never existed.

Since he had nothing to do with 9-11, I still worry about the security at home. I would feel safer if they committed some of the money to securing our country rather than giving it to Halliburton to 'rebuild' Iraq. Oh, by the way, where's Osama?

51. If I beleived the "bringing democracy" crap
I could be MUCH happier - Hussein is gone, something that some of us have been calling/agitating for, for a long time (way back when Rummy was all pally with him and shaking his hand for a photo op)

but as I don't beleive for a second that the US will allow free elections (as they would without a shadow of a doubt elect a party that will nationalise the oil industry and repeal a number of the dodgy "contracts for rebuilding") I don't see a lot to celebrate from the Iraqi point of view - does it really matter which dictator is oppressing you, and as the US has a vested interest in NOT having a trial (way to many skeletons waiting to come out there) and justifying the lies they told to go to war in the first place I fully expect to see a "confession" from Hussein detailing that he HAD WMD's, was actually sleeping with Osama and planned to attack the US at the first possible opportunity...then off to live comfortably in exile for a while - Saudi could do after all they were happy to put up Idi Amin - what's one more local dictator to feed.

The ONLY reason Saddam has been left alive is to bail out chimpy

52. Repulsed.
I'm tired of the Bush sideshows, and I don't like what America has become. This is a very temporary coup for Bush, but once they keep showing the weary and pathetic-looking Saddam complicently being taken into custody, I think it's going to backfire. They should have cleaned him up, gave him some PCP, waited until it kicked in good and hard, and then arrested him. But hell, I'm not going to tell Rove how to do his job.

I'm happy for the Iraqi people, if that means a damn thing, and it doesn't. We've bombed their country into the stone age in order to find non-existent WMD's and to pad an idiot's presidential resume, but they should thank us, because we saved their asses by pulling their former dictator, a pathetic shell of a man, out of a hole. At least our soldiers now have something tangible to grasp when they wonder, 'What the hell am I doing here?'

So what if it's a fantasy, and Saddam was a third-rate dictator among a slew of dictators who would not have the fraction of power they gained had it not been with the help of our tax dollars?

So what if our tax dollars are right now being spent in an attempt to overthrow yet another democratically elected leader--Chavez, no doubt to replace him with a Saddam-like monster who will disappear his people, but what the hell? He'll sell us cheap oil. And then, when another Bush needs a poll boost, he can capture, then parade his former friend in front of the cameras and have the American people indignantly screaming for blood and revenge against a dictator that was never a threat to them, while the people who actually suffered under this monster have no recourse whatsoever.

Time for another beer to take the bad taste out of my mouth.
