10. Spider have you read "The Curse of Lono"?
I was at Pu'u honua O'honaunau today and there is a ki'i(Carved imaged, Hawaiian for "tiki") of Hunter Thompson there. I swear it is the spitting image of Dr Gonzo. I don't know if the carver was paying homage to HST or if it is a coincidence but it is amazing.

(Only pic of it I could find on the web, doesn't do it justice.)

And that kind of looks like it was carved using a Ralph Steadman drawing as a model, from what I can see of it (just needs a cigarette holder...heh)

13. It was amazing. it looks just like HST.
On page 20-21 of The Curse of Lono there is a Ralph Steadman print of the temple at Honaunau. The pic is pretty accurate, the tiki that he drew of Thompson is in the position that the tiki I saw today was in, however the real Thompson tiki doesn't have the "marlin headdress". If you are ever on the Big Island you should check it out.

is a terrible experience. It's filled with traffic and idiotic trucks. You know it's a crappy driving experience when someone from NJ thinks it's terrible and that driving in NJ is comparatively wonderful. Except for the driving part, I do like the eastern portion of CT though.

Edited to add that I just realized you're probably talking about HEyHEY's theory. Oh well, I'm distracted by PeeWee Herman's Fun House. I think it's even more fun now than when I was a kid.

80. We have some family friends coming in from Pittsburgh this week.
Of course, they'll be spending a day at our house in NJ, then they're getting transported up to our CT house. I honestly have no idea how we're going to fit everyone into our CT house, because it's pretty much a cabin. I have a funny feeling I'm going to end up sleeping on the porch or my Jeep. Regardless, I'm going up for the beach, boats, and fishing not for elderly Republican family friends.

28. New Orleans, Orlando, Santa Fe, or San Antonio
Orlando--I just love the whole fantasy playland feel of the region.

San Antonio is a little-known gem. The River Walk, El Mercado, the missions, the cultural feel of the city, the amusement parks, the cuisine.

Santa Fe's a little commercial, but the southwest artist feel is still there. There are a couple of towns around it that are less commercialized, like Madrid or Taos.

99. Another good word for San Antonio...
(Not that it's "better" than NYC, San Francisco, etc.)

But it's the city most Texans visit if they are vacationing inside the State. About a century older than other Texas cities (El Paso is a whole other subject), culture abounds. (Not just "high culture.") There were many early German settlers--not just Spanish/Mexican. Hence the beer. Hence the accordions in Tejano music. (Visit the Institute of Texan Cultures.)

The River Walk is commercial yet charming--you can eat, drink & shop or just wander. San Antonio's Conservation Society has been stopping bulldozers since 1924. Several fine museums & an interesting art scene. I love the Missions--including the Alamo; it had a long history before That Battle. And it's right downtown--next door to the Menger Hotel.

San Antonio is hot in the summer--but a bit drier than humid Houston. And it's on the edge of the Hill Country--delightful to someone raised on the billiard-table flatness of the Coastal Prairie.

60. New York City is the best fucking city in the world.
I've been to prettier places. I've been to nicer places. I've been to cheaper places.

New York City still wins.

69. I don't get it.
I was underwhelmed.

San Francisco seemed much more vibrant and glamorous to me. New York was disappointing. I like London, Paris, and Rome better, too.

77. I've been to London and Rome...Paris is in the works.
Still prefer NYC. It's not about the glamour. I'm convinced that many people visiting NYC are underwhelmed because it's a place that you really need to be familiar with. Tourists manage to be pretty segregated from the interesting parts of the city, which is fine by me.

But of the ones I have, San Francisco would have to be the winner.

85. I love my house and neighborhood, and Mt. Laguna, La Jolla, the weather,
Balboa Park, parts of Mission Bay, and Cuyamaca Rancho State Park. I don't love the crowds and traffic and high cost though. If it was uncrowded and lower in cost, it would be paradise.

105. I like all the good things too
However I also feel the same way you do about the not so nice things.

I like to go on hikes in the Lagunas and the Cuyamacas, and often do so with the Sierra Club. The Cuyamacas look a lot different after the fires in October 2003.

81. Los Angeles!
I just got home from 5 days in St. Louis and I am THRILLED to be HOME.

I've never been so happy to see LA in my life. I'm from the midwest (I've only lived in LA for 10 months), but I could not wait to come back.

And, I'm sorry St. Louisians, but...your city is BORING. I tried. I really did. But :boring:

107. I couldn't disagree more. Arcata is probably the most progressive
city in the U.S. Northern California is god's country. I know there are pockets of freepers in places such as Mill Valley, Ukia, and Redding, but overall anything north of San Francisco is a good place to be. Especially close to the coast (west of the 101).

95. Boston
I've been to many of the major cities and I can honestly say I've found something to like and appreciate about them all (except one but I won't mention it :) ) but Boston is by far my favorite.

Sophisticated, but not to large, diverse but full of tradition, historical but with plenty of opportunity to find cutting edge culture.

Of course I'm biased as I'm from the area but still it's my favorite.

110. I've never actually been to any of the cities I'd like to visit, but
San Fran ranks #1 on my list of cities that I'd like to visit. Something about the people of San Francisco that I have met just gives me the most relaxed openminded and coolest vibe I have ever felt. New York City would be second on my list, but only because I haven't been able to keep up with any great new punk bands form that infamous punk scene of theirs. Maybe they really tie.
