2. It's a sport?
Could have surprised me...

I have to admit to a tad bit of bias on the topic - I went to university in St. Andrews, and can barely mention the place without being asked about that wretched pasttime. By the end of my first term there, I had an inexplicable desire to take each and every golfer, and their clubs around their necks.

Did they add some full contact blundeoning with those clubs? That would make it a sport. :)

They allowed golf carts.

That said I am an avid golfer. There are many reasons to like the game but if you dislike it that is good. The golf courses are too crowded and I would prefer that you never play.

43. "Not really exercise"?
I sincerely hope that's a joke.

I used to golf a little when I was a kid, but I just got my first set of clubs as an adult and I've played more golf this last week than I have at any other point of my life; I have never been as sore as I am right now. Not from long-distance running, not from weightlifting, not from basketball. The strain and stress on a golfer's back and arms is quite intense.

47. I was referring to the golf cart comment. You obviously are getting great
exercise. And I certainly sympathize with you. I had terribly sore muscles from riding horses, which some here would also not think was exercise, except for the horse. My suggestion is to try Arnica cream, which has worked for me. It's for bruising, sore muscles, and stiffness. I got this at my local health food store. Best wishes with this. It sounds as if you're quite athletic, and are bringing this to your golf game...:-)

51. No prob
I'm just always a little upset when someone decides that golf isn't difficult/athletic/etc. just because it doesn't *look* as active as other contact or running sports. It's rather gruelling on both the physical and the mental level.

Thanks for the tip on Arnica, btw. I'll have to look into that. Most of my other athletic endeavors took place in high school, college and my early 20s. After a few moderately sedentary years, I'm trying to become more active as I'm entering my late 20s. Part of the soreness might just be because I'm not such a spring chicken anymore...

Edited on Mon Jul-10-06 01:48 PM by Rhiannon12866
If you remember, Bill Clinton was a golfer, too. And a damn good athlete.:-)

And I can see how it can be grueling, though I've never played golf. myself. My mother did, and she was the athlete in my family. I pretty much stuck to horses and guns, LOL!;)

And please try the Arnica. My friend swears by it and I recently just got some for myself, since I've been helping a friend who is into boating and he's gotten some pretty bad bruises. And it has nothing to do with age, I promise. I got extremely sore at 12, riding horses, and gave a tube of Arnica to my step-grandfather, when he got sore, and he was in his 90s! I just hope that this works for you, as it has for me...:hi:

Rhiannon:D:hi:

on edit, I forgot to mention that I have a pro golfer in my family, Wayne Levi, who is now on the Senior Tour. My mother keeps track of him, the son of her older cousin, since she really enjoys golf, so I'm aware if him...:-)

68. Jesus! I have gotten more replies to this casual post than any I've ever
gotten on any pressing issue that I've ever posted in LBN!!! Yikes! Okay, I agree. You golfers get a lot of exercise! I admitted so in my previous post, when I talked about my second cousin, who's on the pro tour... And you walk quite a bit! I was just picturing Bush*, and, yes, Bill Clinton, on golf carts, which has been mentioned here. But I totally get it now and I know that you guys probably get more exercise, in one day on the golf course, than I get in a year. Look at my dog! Eight pounds! I don't need to walk him that far. If it wasn't for the anorexia, I'd probably be overweight...

One type plays the city courses, which are inhabited by people of all types. I've met very few bad apples on the municipal courses. Then there are the country club assholes which give golfers a bad name.

72. I know no golfers except from DU. My Dad belonged to a country club,
which I gave him endless shit about, but he was not a golfer. I read the rules, when he joined, about foursomes and "playing through" and they seemed pretty ludicrous to me. I was 17, and a rabble-rouser, LOL! But my Dad just went to the beach there and let me take the snapping turtles I'd rescued loose there, which I spoke about at his funeral, and he had dinner there, every Thursday, with my mother, and me, if I was home.:-)

My second cousin, Wayne Levi, is a golfer and is on the pro tour. My mother is very proud of him, but she also was a golfer, though hasn't golfed much recently. She was the athlete in my family. My Dad swam and I rode horses and shot guns, but my mother was most athletic. :-)

78. I agree, too. My mother watches it and she's an ardent Freeper...
I have no problem with people who enjoy playing golf, likes the guys who posted on this thread, but it really is not a spectator sport...:eyes:

74. Nearly half my income comes from golf

So knock it all you want. :)

Actually betting on golf.

In 2000 I discovered an incredible golf matchup wagering system. By necessity after I won less than 40% of my matchup wagers in '99. Stuck two months of stats in Excel via my trusty PowerMac 7500 and an amazing clarity revealed itself upon calculation.

I'm not giving it away specifically, but if you ignore everything other than driving and putting you're on the golden path...

81. I think it's the perfect chick game
Lots of time between action for chat and gossip.

Plus you get to do multiple things at the same time - go for a walk, play a sport and catch up with a girlfriend, and you know how women like to multi-task.

I just wish I 1) worked less 2) could golf as part of work 3) had a lot more money 4) had more girlfriends who golf.

87. Golf isn't a sport, golf is a game.
Sports involve sweating (from exertion, not stress).
